Anytime I hear In-a-godda-da-vida, I think of the episode of the Simpson's where Bart passes out the lyrics to everyone in the church and Rev. Lovejoy says. "And now, In the Garden of Eden, by I. Ron Butterfly". Then everyone is rocking out, the old organ player passes out after playing for like 20+ minutes! A Classic!!!

One rumor I've heard repeatedly about iron Butterfly is the track was supposed to be "in a Garden of Eden", but they were so stoned during the session that it came out sounding like "in a godda da vida". Whatever. Ace find Dice!!

I never heard of Iron Butterfly. The one of A.C. is a classic. Maybe somebody want it as a collectors item.

The last line seems most plausible, that someone got it wrong and they just liked the way it sounded. The other versions could all have been resolved with just someone asking "what did you say?"

Look what I found today in one of my local thrift stores, two classic albums. They are in prefect condition with little to no damage what-so-ever. For $2 I got Iron Butterfly’s 1968 In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida (baby), and for $3 dollars more I got Alice Cooper’s 1974 greatest hits album. O by the way did I mention they have not been opened! They are still in their original plastic wrap with no cuts or breaks in the wrap itself and the covers are perfect. They look like they just came off the store shelf, man what a find! I don’t know what they are worth but one thing I do know is, they are worth more than the five bucks I paid for them. I’m going to look around the net and see what they might be worth in $$ but they are worth a lot to me in nostalgia . One mans junk is another mans treasure. Dutchy, Look up Iron Butterfly, at the time, they had the longest known song. And there are still some awesome instrumentals that haven't been duplicated to this date. --Raven

I may have them put into a shadow box with some other rock collectables, I think they would make a display. The Iron Butterfly album will be 40 years old next year and never opened, don't know how it made it (or Alice's for that matter) so long in such good shape??

Whatever. Ace find Dice!! Growler, that "Rumor" is true. I saw a rockumentry on Iron Butterfly and they admited is was supposed to be "In The Garden of Eden". Looks like the IB album is worth about $60 and the AC anywere from $100-$200, not bad for a $5 invesment.

From Wikipedia: A commonly repeated story says that the song's title was originally \"In the Garden of Eden\" or \"In the Garden of Venus\" but in the course of rehearsing and recording singer Doug Ingle slurred the words into the nonsense phrase of the title while under the influence of LSD. However, the liner notes on 'the best of' CD compilation state that drummer Ron Bushy was listening to the track through headphones, and couldn't hear correctly; he simply distorted what Doug Ingle answered when Ron asked him for the title of the song (which was originally In-The-Garden-Of-Venus). An alternate version of the story, as stated in the liner notes of the 1995 re-release of the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida album, states that Ingle was drunk when he first told Bushy the title, so Bushy wrote it down.
