I watched both of these on TV last weekend. I know one is Hollywood and the other a documentary.

First, I found The Hurt Locker to be a decent film, if a bit disjointed. Maybe that was the intention of the director? However, if you haven't seen it, check it out.

Restrepo is a totally different animal. If you haven't seen this documentary then it is a must see. It is a documentary of an Army unit during their deployment to the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan. It is real, it is raw, it is gut wrenching, and it is up close and personal. There is WIA's, and KIA's. This deployment is the one that led to SSgt Sal Guinta being awarded the MOH, the first living MOH winner since the Vietnam war. BTW, you can check out restrepothemovie.com for excatly what happened that day, the movie doesn't cover that action very well. The movie itself has predeployment, deployment and post deployment footage.

I caught Restrepo on NatGeo over the holidays. Definately a must see! Problem is my wife watched with me and said \"well, good thing you've been to Iraq and won't be going to Afghanistan right?\". Ummm...I probably will but we don't hang out in the mountains. honey. :)

I bought Hurt Locker when it was new on DVD. Pretty good movie and parts are pretty accurate even though it's still Hollywood. Like when they thought about fragging the EOD guy but got into the politics of having to fill out a report and make suggestions on how NOT to let this happen in the future if they did it...spot on...heh. Pretty good suspense filled movie.

I've seen them both and highly recomend both. Also check out the HBO Mini Series Generation Kill. Again, it's Hollywood, but very realistic and even has some of the Marines playing themselves. True story about the first 5 days of OIF with a Marine Force Recon unit. They had an embedded reporter from Rolling Stone.

Generation Kill rocks.
\"POLICE THEM MÜSTACHE HAIRS\" is a pretty popular line at work, and when somebody stupid in charge yells at us, it's \"Whatever, at least I'm not the fuckin idiot who lost a whole goddamned supply truck\"

I still haven't seen Restrepo, but it's in my Netflix queue.
