I was going to go to Australia on leave-en-route from Korea to Eielson, but a family emergency changed my plans. Someday I'll get there.

Race Gal, it's amazing. It's supposed to be dead of winter and it's 21C at the moment...that's about 70F. I'm right on the Coral sea where the great barrier reef is and other than it being more than a little expensive it's probably the best gig I've stumbled onto...but hey, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

I took a side trip there after my last tour at McMurdo, in 04. Hooked up with a dive company in Cairns, hopped a flight up to Cooktown and spent the next 5 days and nights diving the GBR on a live-abord dive boat called the Nimrod Explorer, and ended up back in Cairns. Great trip. If you dive and have a week to spare, it's more than worth it.

Ice Pirate, yes, I dive but I need a re-cert. Cairns is about an hour north of where I am (Townsville) and I've been told by the locals it's a place I should visit so it's on the short list.

Re-cert shouldn't be much of a problem. If you're an old hand like me, and learned to plan your dive and log it afterwards using the dive tables, you're in for a treat. They all use dive computers now that do most of the work for you. The dive computers are as small as a pressure gauge and in some cases have replaced the pressure guage. Some are as small as a wrist watch. All pretty much run themselves. All you have to do is know how to read them, pay attention to the various beeps it will give you for warnings. Find yourself a local shop, and you could be back up to speed within a couple of nights. Then, get your butt out to the reef, you'll be glad you did.

I have a cousin in Cairns. I visit them once a year. Ill have to make a hop over there while im still in Japan.
