So, I was at the Dentist this morning, and we got talking guns and shooting while waiting for the tooth to numb. My dentist and I share a lot of common hobbies, shooting being just one of them.
Anyway, he mentioned being out shooting with some friends and 2 of them had a real Eye Dominance problem. That is that they are both right handed but are Left Eye Dominant. Normally with hand guns this is not a real problem, but with rifles it really is.
On the ranges, I'd always just have the afflicted shooter, step around and shoot off hand, and work with them on their weapons handling to get them both qualified and comfortable with handling the weapon that way. Back in the way-back days of CATM we'd issue the shooter an eye patch. I put a stop to that on my ranges because, \"I ain't gonna be there if you ever find yourself in combat, to issue you an eye patch.\" So I forced the students to find a work around, either shoot off hand or find something close at hand, i.e. their hat, a piece of tape and paper or what ever, to help them keep an eye closed.
So I asked my Dentist, how he helped these 2 souls with their eye dominance problem? One, he said, only shoots with a scoped rifle so it's not that much of a problem for him. The other guy wears glasses, and he just adds a small piece of electrical tape to the bottom inside corner of the left lens.
I don't so much have an eye dominance problem as I do an eye stigmatisum, called a lazy eye. To be honest, I never knew I had it until I went to see an eye dr. back in 2002. I'd complained about double vision towards the end of the day or when doing a good amount of computer work. That's when he told me about my lazy eye, and worked in a correction into my glasses. Apparently, since I was a kid, I'd been forcing the left eye to stay with the right even though it didn't want to, and I was never consiously aware I was doing it. Then thinking back, I remembered that when ever I was shooting, I'd always keep both eye's open, and just consentrated on the one image where both sights lined up. Probably one of the reasons I can shoot just as accurately LH as I do RH, and can even shoot scoped rifles with both eye's open and either handed. The part that really surprised me though was that I could go through the majority of my life unaware that I even had a stigmatisum like that.
At any rate, all this got me to wondering if any of you know or think you might have a similar problem with your eyes. Thought it might be something good to discuss if you want.
