I picked up this link from the CATM website. It's written by a Brit gun collector, and he's a little opinionated but then, who isn't. He's done his homework though and most of what he say's jives with my own first hand knowledge of Colt's development of Carbine versions of the M-16.

It's a good read if you're into firearms and weapons development.

He's slightly wrong about the 653- it does have a forward assist. The Colt 654 is identical except for the lack of a forward assist

The Colt 653 is THE coolest rifle ever built. It took me about a year to round up all the correct parts to build a clone of the 653 my cousin carried in the IDF. I have them all now, all that is left is to have the lower etched and anodized.
