Ok the wife got the new car,I have to wait for a truck, the last year,I been getting a "Check Engine" lite, took it to Ford they replaced Mass air sensor, couple months went by,did it again, changed it again.since truck has over 90,000 (141,245) no warranty.
Still getting lite,I just been disconnecting the battery to reset.
Was at AutoZone and found out they have code readers <img src=newicons/madani.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_furious.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>
Got a PO401 code which is EGR valve has (insificant)? air flow.
Dad &Me cleaned out the Valve, which was a BIT--! didnt remove the line because was affraid to break the line.so just moved it back, sprayed Carb cleaner in it.
They didnt have one but they had the solenoid but didnt know where it went,it took me a hour to find it,right next to the aircleaner of all places, all the way on the otherside of the engine.
Pulled that R&R $24.00 for it.

I hope it fixes it because I'm up to my NECK with screwing with it!
If I have to R&R that Valve I'm going to cry<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> if i break that hose.

Must be a Ford Truck thing, my 1996 Explorer 4x4 (before i traded it in) the check engine light would come on several times a year even though the truck drove well and sounds fine,i had the insignificant air flow code as well.

The dealership replaced several things last on being the O2 sensor, and had tried to convince me to by a chip upgrade for the computer.

Only tip i can really offer (if the other things didn't work) is check around the gas cap. Ford is famous for having the Check Engine Light come on if the gas cap isn't locked on right or there is a crack in the seal etc.

What kind of car did you wife get by the way?

If a check engine light doesn't noticibly affect drivability it can simply be ignored.

Which is the vast majority of the time, lol.

Racegal,
She got a 2005 MALIBU CLASSIC, Traded ,her 95 Escort in it had under 74,000 on it ran great, looked great too but I couldnt get in and out it was too low and it was a real pain with my cane.

I did tighten the gas cap,
Snipe the truck runs fine with the light on,my mileage went down a little, but I got good pick up,I had a black tape over it for awhile to not see it,but when I was thinking of trading it in I better take it off.
I figure we'll see where it goes from here.

Thanks for the Info Racegal.

EGR (Exhuast gas Return) has a Vacuum line atatched to it. REplace the line and 90% of the time it will work. IF not it is more than likely stuck ( they do seize from carbon buildup) spraying lubricant will not help it. The exhuast manifold has a hard plumbed line that goes into it, Its purpose is to put Hot exhuast gas in to the carb or intake manifold to assist cold morning starts to atromise the gas/air mixture. It is always good to Replace the Precatalytic converter o2 Sensors. The EGR does not detect anything it is only a valve operated by the vacuum line

Thug,

are you talking about that little Vaccuum line that comes out of the Valve? I have a disk shaped Valve with a little line to it.
I know what pipe your talking about,I'm soaking it in PB BLASTER while it sits trying to make sure it comes loose without busting the Tubing.

the little black rubber line is the vacuum line, the large metal line-piping is the exhuast gas line. Replace the vaccum line. tyhey are one of them pain in the ass items. the vacuum line tells the computer if it sees x ammount of psi. If it does not, the EGR is stuck or the line has holes.

I got it Thug,
Just wanting to makesure . The repair manual doesnt really show a 2.5l engine its either the 2.3L or 3.0L.
so just to be on the safe side I'll R&R the line before the Valve.

Thanks Thug

After you replace the line, be sure to disconnect the battery. This will dump the code and reset the computer. Most quality autoparts stores have a code reader,(Free Check) to help you investigate it.

Good luck. Fords can be a real pain in the ass.. Must be why i own so many of them. <img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

I got the problem licked finally,
The thing that was throwing me was on the 2.5l engine it has the Vac line in tadmen with another line and their both "hard" not rubber but more re-enforced with wire.
They didnt have a replacement harness for them,so I went ahead and replaced the solenoid, easy enough,Dad said "What the hell" dissconected the Vac line and shot compressed air threw-it ,and low and behold a little dirt came out.
With that said we just hooked it all back-up and no more "lite"
Truck runs better, So thanks Folks for the help.
