I saw the name in the papers, and wondered if it was "Mean Gene". Then, was in Louisiana a week ago, and watched the Saturday morning briefing, and saw him live. Wasn't sure if it was him by the name only, as I didn't know his first name. I didn't realize he went by his middle name.

But, as soon as I saw the briefing, I knew it was him. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> I hadn't seen him in years, but other than the fact he's about 13 years older than when I saw him last, and he's <b>bald</b>, he looks and acts pretty much like the "Mean Gene" we all remember. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

LOOKS GOOD WITH THOSE 2 STARS DOESNT HE?
THEY DID THAT ARTICLE LAST YEAR ON "SUNRAY" IN LEGION MAGAZINE.

He had a spell at Bentwaters as an IP with the 92nd TFS 'Skulls', in the early days of the Hog in USAFE service......ooh dear, that info not 'opsec' is it?
I think he is the best of the spokesmen, Vinny Brookes is way too serious.
Interested to know why he is known as 'Mean Gene'......is he a complete b*****d or is he tight with his money (For certain members who are bereft of humour, that last line was a joke)

I don't know, but I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that there's a "professional wrestling" announcer named "Mean Gene Okerlund". Again, I don't know if that's the tie-in, but that's my suspicion. SGTGOOSE may be able to correct me, though. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

<b>THAT's</b> the name I couldn't remember! Was going through some old photos of one of our trips to Germany, and saw his picture, and couldn't remember his name! Thanks!

I thought he was good, too. While there were some pilots you dreaded having to launch out (two former vice wing commanders come to mind), "Mean Gene" wasn't one of those. He was always very easy to work with, and treated the maintenance folks very well.
