I Think i remember a story about a special paint or panels on a A-10 that could change color in flight. I cant remember where i saw it, I keep thinking maybe a story from Grumman? Seems the pilot could control the color by changing a electric current that ran through the paint

Can't say I've ever heard that one. If you're asking whether the A-10 ever had such a thing, the answer is No.

They just up and disappear!

after that I made sure the \"WEZ\" was set to Heavy Metal, as I was Tucked under his Primary Heat Exchanger the rest of the flight.

NO these were not light strips .the entire airframe was to be charged and had some type of special paint, various voltages would cause the paint would change color. The paper i had showed a F-16 and a A-10 around (86-87 ish)
