Was at Shaw last week for the wifes HS reunion and had a chance to go on base. Got a couple of quick shots of the gate guards there and while I know it's been discussed before I have a question. Why did they change the tail number on the aircraft and does anyone know the actual tail number of the aircraft on display?

Looking at at antenna under the nose, next to the gun, it is likely to be a FY77 model, but saying that FY75/76/78's had those too, not sure of the serial though.
Could be painted as 964 to represent 'Shanghai's' jet he used to drop that helo in GW1, but that was serving with the 10th TFW at Alconbury at that time.

Bacon, it is painted to represent 964 and even carries the green star on the side of the aircraft. I understand that to some it's a has a more historical significance painted this way, but the actual aircraft has a history of it's own and IMHO it would be better if they had used it's actual tail number. I know 964 was stationed at Shaw but that aircraft is still in service and is stationed at Moody now.

Hi Lil! After trying Google without any results, I just started a related request on fencecheck.com. See: http://www.fencecheck.com/forums/index. ... #msg230291

If I get zero reply, let me try some other related aviation forums for this particular question - also interesting to me.

JJ, I know someone on here is stationed at Shaw or lives in the area and thought they might be able to shed a little light on the subject. If nothing else on my next trip I'll do a little more snooping around the aircraft.

Hitler, I feel the same as you but this is another case of fame over history. like when the museum (I forget which one at the moment) had one of the YA-10s painted in the 23rd FW colors.

I think this is one of Shaw's old trainers, let me look through my files tomorrow and I think I can give you a tail number. If you do go back look in the nose wheel well (left hand side) that's where the data plate is located with the serial number of the aircraft.

According to Steve Huckvale, one of my Warthog News contributors, this preserved Hog is 75-0309 (A10-0058). I believe the aircraft was an OA-10A, coded NF, 602nd Tactical Air Control Wing (later 602nd Air Control Wing), Davis-Monthan AFB, to AMARC as AC0075 June 29, 1992.

Hope that helps.
