K, here's a few more. The warthog skull has been refined to look more like a true hog skull. I've added an evil eye to one version, and another features flames that can act as a frame for the name placard. Also tried a few more human skull variations, although I personally prefer the hog skull. The human skull doesn't really conform well to the nose of the plane, so it can only look good from either the side or the front, but not both.

Here's a couple fun ones. Not really practical, but my mind has been known to wander when working...

First two looks like a painting that allready is used by some planes.

The shooting skelet is nice, but maybe only for one special (demo) plane.

I don't like robot things, because that is not timeless.

I like the most the dark skull and the other below with the flame hair.
Put maybe next time numbers by the pics, so it makes easier to comment.

Last but not least. You do a good job Fritz_the_Fox

I like these 2 from the first set, and the armored WH skull with the 30mm Tusk from the second.

Great work Fritz!

Thanks, guys! Here's another human skull, this one rendered in the same style as the popular flaming hog skull.

Still like the first grey warthog skull the best....although it does remind me alot of the Ft. Smith noses......but I think out of all that's the winner.

Just another thought, what about doing a smaller skull type art just on the front of the nose.....the one you did is pretty large....what if you toned it down a little size wise?

I kept seeing this WWII A-20 Havoc when I saw your one image of the skull on the front.....

The lighter one with the clenched teeth looks fantastic!

I'm still digging the original subdued hog skull, but the red eye looks pretty cool too. I actually like the robo-hawg too.

I'm not completely sold on the flaming hog...almost looks like a horse head even though it looks good too.

The flying human skull (with the hash marks and checkerboard) looks pretty bad ass.

Heck, most of them look good...heh. Submit all of the good ones. :)

Just bought a cheap hog model kit to help me figure out how to wrap some of this stuff. Frustratingly, the human skull does not lend itself too well to the shape of the plane's nose. Hoping some three dimensional experiments will give me some more ideas on how to approach it.

I like the little skull on the A-20 nose. I'll try one of those, too.

Here's a few more designs. I messed around a little with some 3D software and picked up a hog model kit today in an effort to see if I could puzzle out an effective way to make the human skull work better on the A-10's nose, but it only seemed to confirm my suspicion that there really isn't a good way to put a flat-faced skull on a pointy-nosed plane and make the image work well from both the front and sides. So instead, for a couple of these designs I worked both viewing angles individually by slipping in a smaller skull on the front to complement the larger images on the flanks. I also tried the A-20 inspired minimalist design, with simply a small skull and crossbones on the business end of the plane.

What about a small red Human Skull for the eye of the Warthog Skull?

Nice work on those Fritz.

you know...and i'm probably the minority here...but I kind of like the last one with the A-20 type small front skull. Who says it has to be all giant and over whelming??

Although if you must have giant, and overwhelming, I'm still for the original warthog skull.

Wouldn't something directly nose-on tend to wear more/faster?

Good point.

I showed the guys at drill this weekend this page and the majority of them liked the flying checkerboard human skull and the original subdued warthog skull the best.

Here's two more, which are refined versions of the most popular ideas.

I've been in correspondence with some of the guys there. I get the impression it isn't a very formal contest. I don't know when it ends or if I'm winning, but I am getting feedback. The wing commander (who I assume has the final call?) wants to focus on the human skull designs. He wants the skull art to wrap around the nose, though, which is problematical. A human skull just isn't shaped that way. I provided some visual examples that demonstrate why that is tricky, and was about to just give up, but on a whim I printed out a skull wrap on paper and taped it onto the nose of an A-10 model and it didn't look as bad as I thought. So I sent photos of the model and a copy of the wrap art to them. I haven't heard back since then, so I don't know where things stand at the moment. I'm resolved to keep sending them stuff until I win or they get a restraining order lol.

Anyway, if nothing else, I'm having fun building this model kit. Wish I'd gotten something besides the Revell, though.

Well its time for

Goose's  Nose Art Review,

The Warthog Skull Looks Cool, but its too much like the Barksdale Nose art with out the Color.
But Fritz You Just have to Damn Much Talent Bro!

The Human Skull Wrap around? Nope,Nope,Nope you might as well put the AR Bull Dog getting Shugged on it then! Makes the same amount of sense.

The Human Skull on the Checker Stripe away from the Nose like on the Tail Would be my Choice. But where you Put it Fritz I Like it.
But you don't need one on it nose, it will wear off in no time.

But like what Coach said \"Its not NASCAR\" .

Fritz, Can you do it on the Verticle Stab.?

But Hog Skull or Human Skull on the Nose doesn't work?
Just IMHO.
But then I like a A-10 in Euro Camo with 23TFW Colors with a 76th TFS Tail Cap and Tiger Teeth and with a Anti-Tank Combat Load like 20 years Ago today! We were Busting our Asses Turning and Burning every Thing We had getting ready for the \"Push\" and The Pilots were Killing Tanks, but we were loosing jets too, but The Old Girls were bringing the Pilots Home ,first before they died.
So putting stuff like that on a A-10 , Has to be Respectful above all to the Jet. I'd stay away from the Nose, unless it is the Barksdales Warthogs Nose in Color. Then put the Human Skull on the Checker board Stripe on the Side or Tail.

The A-10 has earned the right to called \"Warthog\" and be painted as Such. By all Squadrons.

Thats my Soapbox today .

Goose

I think you're getting a little \"out there\" now Fritz, you've had some good entries but, I don't think the unit will like changing the skull as much as you have on this one. Of course...IMHO.

The Biggest thing is Which ever one they Pick

\"It Has to be REPEATED OVER AND OVER JET AFTER JET, For a long time.

So now Which one Would be Easy to make a Pattern for so it can be used over and over again.?

Unless They want to Pay Fritz to come out and Paint each Jet. ?

Wouldn't everyone Agree to that?

Goose
