I've been looking at a lot of Hog nose art and noticed that most, but not all, photos are from the port side. I've seen at least one plane where the art was duplicated on both sides. Were all planes that wore nose art painted on both sides of the nose, or just one side? If just one side, which side was typical for nose art placement? Was there a preferred placement for all planes, or was it a squadron thing, or...?

What do you mean with nose-art? The sharksmiles (teeth around nose and gun) or more what you saw in Desert Storm a painting of how many scuds (for example) they killed?
Try this very good website, maybe this will help you.

Fritz,

I only remember seeing nose art on \"Beach and Cajun\" birds since that was the ones I saw. The UK guys might of had some but we didn't in the 23rd.
I only saw nose art on the \"Port side\" (left side) or Starboard side (right side) but not copied on the other side.of the Jets except if you count \"Squadron Art\" Like \"The Crawl daddy\" of the Cajuns and \"Liz\"(scarlet angel) on the 76th &74th jets. that was on the right and left side on lots of jets.

Basically we kept our \"Kill\" score on the Port side\" while the Beach and UK boys used their right sides to keep score.

My thoughts on that were \"Ahhh, thats alittle over the top\" I think if the Kill tallies would of been on the left side not on the back bone they might of kept them on the Jets.

Goose

I guess I'm wondering if there was any \"official\" specifications for placement of nose art, or whether it was the prerogative of the squadron commander, or just at the whim of whoever happened to have a paintbrush?

Fritz, you won't see any thing \"official\" due to the fact that it \"didn't exist\" aka was against \"official\" regulations. I think for the most part it ended up where ever it was painted. As Goose said, I've seen it on both the left and right side of the aircraft.
