The nickname 'Warthog' is well-known to me, including the shortcut 'Hog' (and also the term 'Hog' drivers). But what's the origin for 'Hawg' aka 'Hawgsmoke' (the term 'hawg' is not mentioned in my English dictionary)?

If there is already related info on Hog Chat, please tell me the URL.

I would be very grateful for any first-hand info.

JJ, Hawg is a colloquialism (umgangssprachlicher Ausdruck?) or an idiom. You won't find it in any dictionary.

So when did the \"hawg\" spelling come into vogue? I left the A-10 for the first time in 81 and it wasn't in use then.

It bacame popular after New Orleans came back from Desert Storm. New Orleans and Barksdale used it mostly. Then, in 2002 or so, it became more widespread when Hawgsmoke started.

I don't think many active duty units use that spelling.

Hawg is just a way to imply Hog with a Southern, \"Hillbilly\" or \"Red Neck\" accent. Kind of like \"GAWD DANG!\" Or \"You Dawg!\"

Just a guess, but I'd expect the New Orleans bunch is behind it. I was born in Cajun Country. :roll:

The \"Cajuns\" used it alot during ODS and then it caught on. I think it kinda of Developed more like \"Crewdawg\".

But other aircraft were also referred to as the \"Hog\" over time.

But if you say \"Thunderbolt II\" people just look at you funny. But there is a link here in this area where all the known \"Nicknames\" are listed a few pages back.

But the Cajuns started the \"Hawg\" I never even seen like that until they used it.

Thats funny, I just always assumed that was the way it was supposed to be written. I have always used it as Hawg and never really thought about it otherwise.
