What does the X over \"Gun\" mean?

I'm no Viper expert, but usually the X means that either the solution is invalid or you cannot use that weapon. Invalid solutions could be anything from radar ranging problems (if the gun solution is computed) to being too close to the target (slant range). I have no mil sizing reference in the F-16 HUD, but if I were looking through an A-10 HUD, that Viper appears pretty large. This pilot may be too close to his target.

The hud imagery is supposedly an F-18F getting a gun kill on an F-22.

I'm not a Hornet guy, but my guess is that the gun is not selected. If range was a problem, the \"X\" would be in the reticle over the pipper.

Just a guess.

I had thought i remembered hearing the X over GUN meant the pilot was pulling the trigger at that moment. Does that sound feasible?

The F18E/F has the same Software Suite. The X over the Gun refers to "Simulate Switch" or In Operable" This is For ACM training only. two Current Switches one that Is accessible and Locked Via a Door (crew Chief) and also in the Cockpit. All Naval Aircraft has a Requirement that the Gun Be Physically Locked and Tagged Inoperable for training Sortie Events. ( the aircraft at times do Carry a Few live rounds in the Drum for Various Reasons) Even if the Pilot wanted to arm the gun he couldnt without first landing and Physically unlocking the Gun.

Now if the gun is active, and their is a Large X across the Entire HUd, then that is a no shoot "Warning due to Radar Ranging Proximity to the Aircraft. It is the same X reference used for Terrain collision Warning. In the Gun case it is For Target Debree Protection of the aircraft.

Only Hollywood shoots and flies through a Debree Cloud.

Snipe Im Currently a Boeing Test Pilot- FTE Working On the JSDA F15's and Korean F15/ F18E/F/G Programs that is the only open source info about it i can share with you.

That particular Screen Capture was a DACT sortie Between a Navy F18F and F22 Squadron. The F18C-F has a Very high Yaw Rate turning capability much like the Su33-27. Navy pilots simulate very well the High Yaw Rake snapshoot tactic used in the Su27.

The only disadvantage is the su27 can put on the power quickly and recover where as the F18 cannot.
