Post subject: | Q: switches panel just in front of the HUD |
Hi all, I'm working on a A-10 model for Flightgear (Open Source Flight Simulator). I'm aiming at a very realistic model, for instance the electrical system is modeled with the battery, the generators and converters, the busses...). Now I have a few question about the switches panel which is just in front of the HUD video recorder. ![]() This panel has obviously something to do with the radar altimeter but I never seen another aircraft using a radar altimeter with such a panel. My guess: ALT ALERT (UP/DOWN): sets the lowest permited AGL. But how to know which is the setting, is it displayed on the HUD ? ALT: - RDR: show the actual AGL (in the HUD ?) - BARO: show barometric alt (in the HUD ?) - DELTA: could be elevation above minimum AGL ? What is it used for ? DATA (UP/DOWN): ???? SEL (UP/DOWN): ???? ENTER: ???? I would be really thankful if someone could provide some kind of short manual on this panel use. Alexis |

Alt Alert sets the minimum altitude warning for the radar altitude. It uses AGL. Can also set a \"stay above\" or \"stay below\" value (line in the sky) using the barometric altimeter. The value is only displayed when the switch is activated and for 10 seconds afterwards. The RDR/BARO/DELTA switch is used to select which altitude source the computer uses for weapons delivery calculations. Displayed in the HUD when in a weapons delivery mode. The DATA switch is for selecting values in various menu areas such a fuze times or times of fall. SEL is for selecting between various menu items. Enter is to enter the values selected. |

Was this added as part of the LASTE mod?, I never recall seeing that prior to 91. |

Alexis! There's a nice picture of this panel on page 67 of Jake Melampy's photo book \"The Modern Hog Guide - The A-10 Warthog Exposed\", Reid Air Publications, 2007: http://www.reidairpublishing.com/RAP03.html ![]() The photo caption states: The Options Select Panel (OSP) was added during the LASTE modification beginning in 1992. It is used to select options through the HUD such as types of weapons loaded on the aircraft, etc. This information is then relayed to the weapons computer for computations of proper bomb ballistics qualities, etc. It also contains a Built-In Test (BIT) function to test avionics before each flight. The altitude controls at the left of the OSP are for input of the desired altitude for the aural altitude alerter (\"Bitchin' Betty\"). It is mounted on top of the instrument panel in front of the HUD. Note: This recommendable book was supported by some A-10 professionals, including George Hitchins, former Hog Driver of the 23rd Tactical Fighter Wing. |

Wow, thanks a lot guys, that good information. @JJ, I folowed your advice and just ordered my copy of this book. Well, Now I think I'm going to model some basic display on the HUD for setting the altitude warning. That will be all for a first step as I don't think there is a manual publicly available for LASTE systems. So thanks a lot Mmmh, BTW, don't be fooled by my forname, I'm a guy ![]() |

Good luck for your upcoming work, Alexis! I'm sure: Jake's photo book should be a top source for you. |
