Have to agree. I was a load toad on the A-10 and there ain't no down angle to that puppy. If it pointed down, the recoil would actually lift the AC's nose and throw off the aim of the pilot. This is the same reason that an M-16 dosen't climb when you fire FA from the shoulder, it has a straight line design so the recoil is sent straight aft and into the buffer group and the shooter's shoulder.

To my knowledge, the only Air Craft ever to have had a downward pointing guns were the F-102 and F-106 because they maintained a 5 degree nose hight attitued to stay aloft.

Man, I thought Yon had his stuff together better than that.

Guys the way I remember it the gun does have a downward tilt of about 4 degrees (3.8 or 3.9) which was designed into the system after the lost of one of the test birds form gun gas ingestion. The tilt forced more of the gun gas under the aircraft helping with the flame-out of the engines from the ingestion. A benefit of this tilt was to allow the A-10 to fire from almost level flight (from longer slant ranges) and hit targets on the ground.

The downward tilt is so small it doesn't affect the pitch of the jet much if you include the SAS system. let me see if I can find some documentation on this in my files.

The slight tilt is apparent in lithographs of the Hog.

The tilted down appeance on the ground is because the aircraft requires a slight nose-up attitude in flight. The gun fires directly along the axis of flight at normal tactical airspeeds. It is not tilted down so they can strafe down in level flight. Besides, if that were the case, you would see the A-10 doing WWII movie style running strafe attacks, which we don't do.

Come on! You guys are better than that!
