Still new enough to the A-10 that I'm a little confused. What is the little pod that hangs from the right nose side, and is it still used on the C model? Most C's I've seen don't have the pod. The reason I ask, I'm on staff at SimHQ.com...a simulation website. Last quarter of this year a new PC flight sim is supposed to be released called DCS: A-10C Warthog and it's really got folks buzzing because of other Eagle Dynamics and DCS flight sims of the past (Flanker, Lomac, Blackshark). Plus, a new A-10C HOTAS controller from CH is coming. There's never been a good A-10 simulation and this is supposed to be \"the one\"! Anyway, SimHQ released some computer wallpaper screens and I noticed this FT jet has that pod. Should it? http://warthog.simhq.com/images/wallpaper2.jpg Further Sim news: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/f ... rthog.html Thrustmaster A-10C HOTAS report from E3: http://www.simhq.com/_commentary/all_101c.html |

Weasel, first yes it should be there. It's called a Pave Penny pod and it's a LASER RECEIVER which was used on the A-10A to receive ground or air based lasers to do different functions such as prioritize targets. It was keep on the A-10C as a back-up for other systems and a secondary sensor if needed. heck it was there so why not keep/us it. I'll be on the SimHQ forums as soon as I can get my account fixed. |

Yo Dice, if you need help with your SHQ account let me know, maybe I can help. As for the Pave Penny...doesn't the Litening Pod and/or SADL do the same thing? In the past 5-6 months I've been to Barksdale, Moody, and MD ANG...and so far I haven't seen that pod once on any jet. Probably a good backup, but haven't seen any. ![]() |

The pave penny pod is on prob 90% of the jets here at Moody. The only time it gets removed is for wash prep or a declass. |

Pave Penny pod will probably disappear soon. It's a maintenance nightmare and with an ATP, utility is reduced. Coach |

I'm at Moody now doing transfer acceptance and do notice most jets have the Pave Penny. We have a Baltimore QA guy with us and he said we only had them on the jets we're taking...to take them home as equipment and store them in a back shop. ANG rarely uses them. Talking to a few Moody Crew Chiefs, they don't like them because of a lot of code 2 status on a secondary system. BTW, why is it so freakin' hot here!?! ![]() ![]() |

Shoot I was launching out a jet this morning (first in 13 years and remembered everything...I know not hard but give me my "moment" of accomplishment) and I think I lost 10 pounds in just sweat.... |
