Mudd question with all this talk about Iraqi UAV's. Considering the speed that these things fly at and there size. Would the Hog be an Ideal platform to knock them down, or would a helicopter. It seems a the faster fighters would have trouble flying slow enough, or am I wrong.

Not to get into non-public information, but would a IR missle or radar missle be able to get such small targets? From what I have seen the Hog got both its air to air kills with the gun against helicopters.

Even that is some thing I would hate to contemplate, 30mm shells being fired over a city.

90% of the Iraqi UAVs are designed on the Pusher boom Concept simular to the Mazlat Pioneer. Now they also have specially modified types that are the size of private aircraft. Plus some migs with modified canisters. it only takes 1 aircraft to cause an epidemic.

Typical speed is around 60-90 Knots. Yes the A10 is Ideal for attacking these. More so due to A10 communities specialty in Low altitude a2g engagements.

We dont fire the main gun in training in the viper and f15Es ofton enough. Only practice A2A snap shots "simulated"

It really is tough to engage an aerial tgt that flys slower than Stall speed, and its really a wide aspect shot or a lead track. 9M/9p would be Ideal for this. Provided u could get tone/heat signature. Aircraft can get to the scene quickly, but they are at times difficult to detect and visually identify. Composite matierials includeing Balsa absorb radar.

The problem with Biological and Chemical weapons. Is that insects can communicate the disease. The Japanese were actually the first to try this. They attacked China in the 1930's and wiped out several chinese villages with Blubonic Plagued locusts.

Also air dispersal at altitude.

Mudd, I am familiar with the japanese experiments in Burma. I hope we never face some thing like that. I am also familiar with the Japanese bombing of the west coast with balloons during WW2. Again I hope we never see that.

But from what you said above it seems to me that these UAVs are poor man's stealths.

some of those "balloon bombs" got as far as Iowa!!

as far as the A-10 vs UAVS is concerned, yeah it would be THE platform ONCE it actually got there but your basically talking about using it as an interceptor ( yeah I know against a 100 kt enemy LOL) so the problem would be in finding and routing the hogs to the target,(dont know what kind of range a Pioneer/Heron/Predator would be detected at?) once they get a viz lock on it, the UAV would be dead meat (hmmm... a couple of fletchette rockets from behind or nose to nose should do the trick, probly the cheapest too)

Some of the documentaries I've seen talk about the Iraqis using Czech L-29 Delphins as UCAVs.

Being as the the Predator is Hellfire capable, I wonder what it would take to mount a rocket pod on one and use it...

When you think about it a crude V-1 type device in the hands of terrorist would not be beyond there ability to build. It seems to me mudd that we are going to have be creative in how we look at the post september 11 world. Do you think this will lead to more funding for the Airforce, and maybe something less exoctic than the f-22 or joint strike fighter. Which appear to be way to fast to effectively engage these weapons, that are basically toy remote controll planes on steriods?

I mean remember the kid who crashed the cessna into the building just after september 11. The coast guard was near by in a helicopter but was not equipped to aggresively engage that target. Not that I advocate armed fighters everywhere, but could modernized propeller driven boarder patrol type craft be brought online for daily use. Based upon an old but efficient design P-51, totally modernized with long loiter times (5 hours plus), low cost of ownership, easily used to monitor the airspace around large public effents, and sufficient for basic interception of the less exoctic threats now arriving on the scene. Seems armourments could easily befound off the shelf the standard 50 caliber machine gun, and stinger missles. This would create a homeland defense system sufficent to interdict small terrorist threats both on the ground and in the air, while calling in the faster much more expensive systems if it ever becomes necessary.

Or would this be pipe dream in a fast jet loving modern airforce.

I've talked about this with my squardon. But now it seems possible: A Civil Air Patrol Fighter!! Yes, just think of a cesna loaded up with guns and rockets! No longer looking for down airplanes in the mountions, now Combat patrol over the cities. he he he.

We probly got a bunch of them out in the desert, it's called the Bronco. Probly the best COIN aircraft ever!! The OA-10D with the AAS-37 pod and the M-197 gun would probly be good-to-go right out of the box, with just some NAV/COM upgrades(but we cant afford a new type in the inventory ). Mudd what kind of mission endurance did those things have?
