As I recall the A-10 has a set of special flaps on its wings to instantaneously reduce airspeed (spoilers?) to supply the pilot with a bigger window of time to "rattle and hum" a tank to kingdom come. Am I correct with my recollection? If so, how big a difference is there in speed when extending the spoilers? How much G-force does a pilot have to endure? (If one can call it G-Force anyway) Tx, Steven <font size=1> <i>"Thus far, the master wrote...and then the master died." Steven, At this time it is not a safe policy to openly discuss tecnical details of the Aircraft, Mission or Tactics. These types of questions can be used for advesarial forces to develop procedures to counter our aircraft and personel. To simply answer your question the A10 is not a supersonic aircraft but flies very comfortably in the lower subsonic regions. It is able to engage targets where other fighters are limited in corner velocities and best turn radiusv So in essence they are not truly utilised like per say a ww2 Stuka Divebomber. The Clamshell spoilerons do not suddenly stop the aircraft. As to the effect of G's, of activateing it in the dive, it would not be anymore than +/- 1 g. |
