Hi! I'm writing a report for a college class on warthogs and thought this would be a good place to get some info I'm lacking, if you all would be willing to help. I realize the sensitive nature of revealing technical details while we are at war, but I thought some of the questions I had were pretty general info and the info I'm posting is easily found all over the web. So I hope I'm not breaking any codes of discretion. I just haven't been able to find the answers I'm looking for at the usaf and news sites. So here goes...(please forgive my ignorance).

I understand that the A-10 was designed to loiter near battle areas for extended periods of time, but how long - generally speaking, I mean? I realize wind resistance, altitude, load, etc. would be a factor. Also that it has a wide combat radius. Approximately how wide? And that it has redundant hydraulic systems; do the Thunderbolt IIs have 3?

I know what armaments they are capable of carrying, but don't know what each is used for. If the 30mm Gatling guns are capable of taking out tanks, what types of situations are the other arms used for? I'm assuming the 2.75 inch rockets are used for air to air. Am I wrong? What about the Mavericks, Sidewinders and cluster bombs?

I am truly in awe of the Warthog's survivability. Would anyone be able to help me with a source for a photo of an A-10 that had a large section shot out of the wing that still landed successfully? A friend saw the story on Discovery, but I was unable to find it on their site I'll be including a Power Point presentation with my report and that would be great for showing its survivablility.

I realize I'm asking a lot, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email any info. Sorry for the intrusion on your forum by an amateur.

COntact a Public affairs office or make a FOIA request with the Dept of Defense. They are the ones that could best dispense what is sensitive and what is not sensitive info.

Nobody here will divuldge these details while our serviceman and friends, family are engaged in combat.

By the way are you the same individual going through Yahoo members directory looking for pilos and wanted to perform a pilot gender survey?

I understand completely. I didn't think the info I was seeking was so sensitive. I figured that anyone seeking 'secrets' or sensitive info would already know a lot more than what I'm looking for.

Wow. Great source. Thanks! Especially the links to the various arms - very informative. I can even use the deployment map in my Power Point presentation. I really appreciate it.

If anyone does come across the afore mentioned photo or one similar, could you please let me know? I'd like to include one in my presentation to give my statements on how survivable the warthog is some credibility.

Blondegeek, go to the main page of this site and click on the photos page(s), on page 9, bottom two rows shows and A-10 with it's tail shot all to hell. Page 12, row 3, second pic shows the leading edge of a wing shot-off during Desert Storm (I think this is the one you are looking for). Page 16, row5, last two shots, and row 6 of the same page shows an A-10 which took a SAM in the right engine over Kosovo.

The orginal design specs for the A-10 required a combat radius of 250 miles with a two hour loiter time carrying a min. of 9,500 pounds of weapons, the Hogs meets or excedes these specs.

Ugly but well hung!

Thanks! I saw them earlier today. There are definitely some there that I'm going to use, but the one I'm looking for actually had a guy standing in the middle of the whole blown in the wing. The one you're speaking of is pretty darn impressive, tho, and I'll probably go with it.

I think the pics you are talking about were of a Hog flown by now Lt. Col. Paul "PJ" Johnson. The A/C was number 664, and there was extensive damage to the right wing.

Here's an article on Lt. Col. Johnson

This mission was flown by PJ and earned him the Flying Cross.

I can't find any pics right now of the mission you are talking about with #664, but if you do a google search with some of those terms you will probably be able to come up with something.

Thanks, Thud. Awesome story. I'll make mention of P.J. in my presentation.

Btw, love going to Wright Patton AFB Museum (source of the second link) when I'm in Dayton. Great place.
