I am researching the February 25, 1991 A-10 sortie by Capt Eric "Fish" Salomonson and 1/Lt John "Karl" Marx of the 76TFS/23TFW from England AFB, La. In some references, the names are spelled "Solomonson" and "Marks". Any leads on the pilots or equipment would be helpful. Thanks in advance. |

THANKS FOR THE REPLY AND THE GREAT STORY. I AM WORKING ON A FORCED-PERSPECTIVE (ENCLOSED) DIORAMA OF ONE OF THEIR PLANES RE-ARMING DURING THAT DAY, BUT I DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE ENVIRONMENT, AIRFIELD, EQUIPMENT, ETC. WOULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE AT THE "FOL". I HAVE ALSO RESEARCHED, BUT COULD NOT FIND OUT WHAT THE MARKINGS (NUMBERS, NAMES, ETC.) FOR THEIR PARTICULAR PLANES. I HAVE DECALS FOR 23RD TFW, AND WILL EITHER MAKE MY OWN DECALS OR HAND-PAINT THE REST. I AM THINKING ABOUT A PRE-DAWN OR EVENING SCENE WITH A 30MM LOADER (SCRATCH-BUILT) A BOMB-LOADER WITH A MAVERICK, AND LIGHTED MAINTENANCE ACTIVITY. WHAT WOULD THIS LOOK LIKE? I WILL SEND YOU A PICTURE WHEN I AM DONE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. |

WELL,I WASN'T AT THE FOLAT THE BEGINING OF THE AIRWAR.WE HAD MOST OF THE PLANES BACK AT KING FAHD EVERYNITE. THE FOL DID THE REFUEL AND SECOND SORTIE AND THE PILOTS CAME BACK TO KFIA ON THE 3RD AND THEN WENT OUT IF NEEDED FOR THE 4TH. GO TO MY WEB PAGE htttp:// community.webshots.com/user/sgtgoose166 I HAVE PICS OF THE REVIETMENTS. AS FAR AS LIGHTED MAINTANCE AREAS "A FLASHLIGHT "WAS IT.UNLESS IT WAS A MAJOR JOB THE PLANES WERE ARMED WHEN THEY CAME HOME AND READY AT DAWN FOR LAUNCH.ALSO THE PILOTS DIDNT VERY OFTEN FLY THEIR JET.WHATEVER SLOT THEY FELL INTO THE ROTATION. I'LL EMAIL YOU AND WE'LL WORK ON THIS.I HAVE A COUPLE OF FRIENDS THAT WENT INTO THE FOL FROM THR UK AT THE END. WE ROTATED OUT THEM IN. " I take back all the bad things I've ever said about the A-10.I love them. They're saving our asses." LTG CHUCK HORNER (WHAT NO LAWNDARTS?) |

Marks. Those that remember Lt. Marks know he was/is a "slight" individual. Not very tall, nor very heavy. Was a light, skinny, young-looking fellow. Anyway, Jimmy Ard said when Lt. Marks came out to the airplane that day, he was quite naturally nervous about what was about to happen. I think Jimmy quoted him as saying, "I don't know, chief, I'm kind of worried about all this", or words to that effect. Then, weeks later, after he'd flown many combat sorties, and possibly after the one where he and "Fish" killed 23 tanks between them, he was recovered after a mission. The chief asked him how it went. "It was great! I shot x tanks, x APCs, and I didn't have to kill one truck!" Also, "Fish" and "Karl" received new nicknames during the war, especially after the day they killed 23 tanks. "Fish" was Captain Maim, and "Karl" was "Lt. Maim". Does anyone remember who "Col. Maim" was? -=> coming to you "almost live" from Searcy, Arkansas <=- |

By the way, I haven't forgotten about scanning Desert Storm pictures and burning them to a CD. I will do that. Have scanned some already. Just got a pile to go through. Also, have some pictures of England AFB/Air Park as it is today, that I intend to post soon, including a shot or two of what is now the U.S. Marshals Service hangar, but *used* to be Hangar 525, a.k.a. "Red Section's hangar". -=> coming to you "almost live" from Searcy, Arkansas <=- |
