as usual my tv was on while i was surfing here.
in the german news they said a navy jet crashed before landing on a carrier, the crew got out safely.
anyone has more details? i couldn´t find anything about it.

i think it´s remarkable that this is the first accident, with this huge amount of missions under war-conditions - my respect to all who contribute to this perfomance.

There was an S-3 Viking that had safely trapped on the Carrier and was taxing to the Weapons safety postion. Brakes failed and the aircraft rolled off the carrier. Both flight officers ejected and were picked up by Flight Safety helo.

That's not the only one.....

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>U.S. officials said a Navy F-14 crashed in southwest Iraq at 11:33 p.m. (2:33 p.m. ET) Tuesday. Both crew members bailed out at 20,000 feet and were rescued and taken to a U.S. air base on the Iraqi border, officials said.

The F-14 apparently lost one engine when another aircraft tried to refuel it, officials said.

That is from cnn.com - it is the only place I have seen the report so far....

Suppose to drop the hook with a brake failure and hopefully the deck crew can chock you to a stop.

Been reading about some maintenance problems with S-3s too. Probably there last deployment too.

jeeze brakes seem to fail a lot on carrier planes, remember when that Tomcat went over the edge, and we had to fish it out before the Ruskies got it? Long time ago but still....

Sorry Boomer, that one was unrelated to brake failure, plane handlers did not tie it down correctly........

Looks like an F-18C was bagged by a SAM, I hope our CSAR assets get the pilot out safely.

Might had been a Patriot hit too. Latest news is hinting at it.

First off hello to everyone on this board. Hope you don't mind another ex F-4 wrench jumping in here.

I was a final checker on both the phantom and the S3. I'm wondering if there wasn't a mechanical failure of the brake system. But more likely a combination of a very slippery deck that could have been pitching and rolling that caused the S3 to go over the edge.

Chad , I thought the crew were still in the Tommy when it started to roll away? Shouldent the brakes still have been working IF the crew was still in the pit? I have some video I'll check it out later.

Boomer........I bet you and I are thinking of seperate incidents. I am thinking of the one in the late 70's......I am to lazy to refrence it right now, but the handlers did not secure it properly and it fell over-board along with its support equipment.

There was a mad dash to salvage the aircraft due the the sensitive technology envloved (eg) AWG-9 system, which is now archaic by todays standards.
