F-20 wasn't skipped at all.

Tigershark, remember?

Also, in this vien, the F-18E should really be the F-24.

The F-35 should actually be the F-25.

Confusing, eh?

The Goldwaters/Nichols Reform Act redesignated US Military aircraft ID numbers before the F-14........The USAF atleast had sense to their system, explain the F-8U Crusader, and the F-4H-1 Phantom..........The Phantom was a later aircraft, yet numbered lower............whereas the century series designations of the USAF fighters followed a numeric order. Thankfully its a simple system now, with the exception of the jump to the F-35, from the YF-23.

The Navy designated their aircraft by the manufacturer. An first designation for the F-8U is for fighter design number eight from the Vaught Aircraft Corp (the U was the designation for Vaught). Others were: F = Grumman (example the F6F, F4F, TBF) D = Douglas (example the SBD for Scout Bomber, Douglas)

How about the Boeing birds? There is a 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and I think a 787 as well. What happened to the 717? Is it the KC-135?

THe KC-135 is a 707, and the KC-10 is a DC-10.

I always thought the KC-135 was a modified 707 which Boeing called the 717 and that's why there isn't a 717. Do you know why there isn't a 717 out there?

sorry Snipe the KC-135 isnt a 707, VERY close but they are 2 different aircraft, and SOME 707s have been modified for tanking with other airforces. Among other things the 707 fusalage cross-section has a mild pinch at the floor, kinda looks like an "8" if you can see one on the production line, in a pic of an AWACS or JSTARS you can slightly see this pinch as a crease running the length of the fusalage it isnt round shaped like the KC. The 717 is now applied to the McDonall Douglas DC-9/MD-80/90 family of planes.

And of course the F-117 would NEVER have been given the A-11 or A-12 numbers since those numbers were already taken back in the 60s by pre variants of the SR-71, sheesh where does this dregg come from !! oh yeah my fault sorry hehehehe.

Maybee it's already in this thread somewhere but the F-19 dez was(alledgedly) skipped at the request of Northrup to start a "new series for a new aircraft" the F-20 which of course wasnt new at all, just a re-worked F-5 planform (just as the YF-17 was just the latest version of the old "Cobra" designator from Northrup, P663? wasnt that one of the cobra numbers in northspeak?)

Lol...and he calls himself "webmaster" ... I wouldn't go to his site just for that stupid note....

Perhaps because I'm a Tigershark lover for years :)
I thought F-5 was pretty cool..and F-20 was even better designed (even if close to)

A so pretty forgotten and unexploited tremendous plane:

The world should have trust in him...:
'The F-20 was reliable and easy to maintain. Based on comparisons with the average of contemporary international fighters, the F-20 consumed 53 percent less fuel, required 52 percent less maintenance manpower, had 63 percent lower operating and maintenance costs and had four times the reliability'
and as far as I remember, F-16 can barely reach M2 as F-20 did 'easily' (was designed for should I say) and it was the best to exploit high computer technology at that time.

question, the F117, like the F111 has no fighter capability, save for maybe 2 AAMs, so why "F117", surely it should be called "A117", can anyone elaborate why it is called the F117?

The F designation probably had a lot to do with misinformation and subterfuge, but it'd just be a guess.

Ok, according to a book, Skunk Works , I read by Mr. Ben Rich (mastermind behind the F-117 and head of Skunk Works for a while) The competition for the future fight, F-20, was to create a cheep fighter that was easy to shoot down. This was to be sold to our allies that might turn on us. on page 307 the quote is "... the F-20, built at th administration's suggestion as a so-called nonproductive fighter, which meant one that was made to be sold to friendly countries but desinged to be vulnerble to our own state-of-the-art interceptors."

now testors made a model called the F-19, it was suppost to be the stealth fighter but looked more like blackbird.

Dear Abby, I joined the Navy to see the world. I've seen it. Now,
how do I get out?

I think the AF just has an aversion to anything that doesnt sound like it'll go mach 2 and set your hair on fire. The last "A" was the Corsair, and of course we know how they seem to feel about our little T-Bolt "if we stick an A on it, maybee folks will think it belongs to the Army" wouldent be surprised if that was said in the house of 5 walls regarding the A-10.
