Guys was looking at info on Sr-71. first could the YF-12 or any variant be made air worthy again? Second what are you thoughts on the B-71 with small diameter bunker buster bombs? Just in kinetic energy from the speed of B-71 it would an awsome weapon I would think.

I know the Johnson administration destroyed all the tool to make new sr-71. Does anyone know the rational for this?

Matt

I don't enough about aerodynamics to comment with any authority, but wouldn't the drag rapidly negate any speed benefit you got from the launch platform?

Isn't there some sort of Vmax that the velocity of a free-falling projectile will be limited to?

Initally it would have a lot more energy but after a few hundred meters, wouldn't the extra speed be lost?

You could do the same thing just by boosting the bomb with a rocket motor like the AGM-123 Skipper. One of the JDAM 2000lb variants was supposed to get a booster but it looks like the idea was dropped.

A 9mm MAY expand, but a 45 will NEVER shrink!
