Ran across this pic last night and thought it was cool enough to share.

That is really a sharp picture. A scene from Vietnam?

Most likely.
Can anyone confirm if that is a BAR being carried ( looks kinda M-60ish to me )and if he's Army or Gyrene? I dont know squat about uniforms.

Boomer......after looking at the pic again, you might be right about the BAR. Looks like it has a mag in it. Three other things I noted: the GIs uniform is very well creased, the A4 has drop tanks and the terrain looks like desert. Whatcha think?

That's very early Vietnam era, like around 65 or 66 at the latest. Could actually be much earlier(Note WWII style uniform and webgear)- not sure when the A-4 was introduced.
That is indeed a BAR. Troop lacks the globe and anchor on the helmet face, so it appears to be an Army soldier. Also, no rank visible on the sleeve indicates it's a Pvt E-1.

BAR (been there done that) uniform is starched he can not be in Vietnam. Must be stateside in or around 1955 to say 1958.
No rank he should be a PFC at best with a single yellow strips on each arm if he is in the Army. If he was in basics he would only have an M1 and no A-4 over his left shoulder, which make me think he is USMC in AIT.
Really it looks like it was staged for a camera shoot.

When you look at this picture in Microsoft Photo Editor and work the brightness and contrast a little you fine what looks like a white name tag on the left side I can all most make out something on it I think. But we always had our name tags on the right side
<img src=newicons/idea.gif border=0 align=middle>
Remember the last time boomer posted a picture it was on strings so this time the A-4 must be on strings and the guy is really a GI Joe

I'm coming to the conclusion that the pic ( as cool as it is ) is not what it seems to be.
1: getting the Scooter AND a soldier running up a hill in-frame together would not have been easy.
2: the soldiers left arm has a fuzzy outline. 1st reason, it is moving rapidly and is blurred ( but the plane is not?!?!? ) 2nd reason, it is farther from the camera and thus out of focus ( again, but the plane is not?!?!)
I think the plane was added later, the question is wheather this was an old promotional pic with the work done in a darkroom, or was it done recently in Paint Shop or Photoshop. The Meta-tags for the photo say it was produced with Photoshop but that could simply have been resizing or some contrast work.

Still, any pic with a BAR <u>AND</u> a Heinemans Hot Rod is a good one lol

As to the white name tag. At the beginning of VN, the Army's Service and Name tapes were both black lettering on a white background. Yes the name tape goes on the left side, but the service tape is on the right.

As far as the blurred arm and sharpness of the fast mover goes. It's not out of the question for it to look that way in a legitimate single shot. The jet, while moving really fast, is much further away and moving towards the camera. The soldier's body while in motion is also moving straight towards the camera, but his left arm is swinging out to the side and is moving across the camera's field of view, so, while not moving as fast, is moving in such a way that it would be more likely to blur.

Also, if you look at the bottom of the soldier's feet, you'll see the helmet and rifle muzzle of the next guy in line. If the photographer is squating down, more than likely, he had all the time in the world to line up the shot as the soldier ran towards him and filled the frame.

Although I don't know for sure if the pic is legitimately a single shot, but it is plausable. Both soldier and jet are moving in the same direction and with a good wideangle lens, you'd have enough depth of field to get them both in focus. Its also possible that the origional pic, the negative, actually showed much more, and was cropped and printed to show a very small part of the over all photo. Thats the way photography was done BD, (Before Digital). It would also help to explane the grainyness of the overall picture.

Or, I could be wrong.

I tend to agree with the Pirate.

Arghhhhhhhhhhh............ ;)

Only thing that would leave me to believe it's faked is the long white vert line and smudge on the left of the photograph.

well zero chance of a wide angle lens being involved due to the foreshorening of the plane. Also as the fusalage reveals, the plane is not really even close to coming right at the photog, the amount of linear change in the plane should be as much or more than the hand and should be similarly blurred. Even the left boot has a small amount of blur, yet the plane has nearly none.(btw looks like the plane is carrying a TER on the centerline, either empty or full of smurf bombs.

It is either Vietnam or somewhere in Israel and that is definetly an American Navy or Marine paint job so I think Vietnam would be a good bet. I have to admit that is one cool picture especially ifin you are a big fan of Heinman's Hot Rod. I dont care if it was phot shopped I like it and give it a thumbs up.

I'll throw my couple pennies into the ring and say its an early shot from Ft Irwin.
Promo shot for recruiting. Like someone said, you can see the helmet of the next guy waiting to top the hill!
