So now that the C-130J has been around for a little while does anyone have a better opinion of it?

I remember a lot of complaints in the past about a variety of ailments- real or percieved.

Anyone got input on this?

The word I have from the C-130 guys is nothing but glowing reviews. One of my co-workers is a die hard C-130 guy (former flight engineer) and despite the fact that the "J" model has no need for a flight engineer he can't saw enough good things about it. I was on the flight deck for a Marine "J" model a few weeks ago and was very impressed with the layout.

Gravity....its not just a good idea, its the law.

Biggest thing I heard was that they weren't certified for combat areas. They get that taken care of?

Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure ain't fun!

My brother is a J-model IP at Little Rock (part of the initial cadre of J IPs) He's flown Es and Hs and just LOVES the J.

I'll ask him about the combat certification.

Last word I had on the "J" was a problem with the known icing cert. The combat limitation had to do with the load computer (believe it or not) and nothing to do with the airframe itself.

Some days it's hardly worth chewing through the restraints

Talked to my bro last night. The J is now fully combat certified. In fact, the CA and RI ANGs are flying Js in Iraq as we speak. At first, they were relegated to non-combat realted airlift ops, but now they are fully combat capable (tactical airlift, air drop, etc.) If you'd like any clarification, I'm sure my bro would be happy to answer any questions on this forum.
