Any interest in seeing the pictures I took at the Los Angeles Museum of Science and Industry?

They have one of these out at Hill. I took a bunch of pix of it and posted them when i was out there a few years back.

Evan beat me to it. Its a SR-71C at Hill (only one of its kind). The maintenance guys HATED it. It was nicknamed "The Bastard" since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A (S/N 60-6934) and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing. The plane was built to replace the second of the two B model trainers after it crashed on 11 January 1968. The C model made its first flight on 14 March 1969 from the Lockheed plant at Palmdale, California, with Blackbird Chief Project Pilot Robert J. Gilliland at the controls and Lockheed test pilot Steve Belgeau as Reconnaissance Systems Officer. After flight testing it was delivered to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB, California, on 3 September 1970. The aircraft made its last flight on 11 April 1976 and was removed from flying status on 24 June 1976 with only 556.4 flight hours, not including the 180.9 hours accumulated on the aircraft as YF-12A S/N 60-6934. It was then processed for long-term storage at the Lockheed plant in Palmdale, California.

The C was never flown past mach, because it was described as not able to fly straight and "not quite square" in terms of assembly.

If you're using a hosting service like photobucket(which i highly reccomend- its also free), just change the letters in the "IMG" and "/IMG" to lower case, ie, "img" and "/img"

Here...i'll edit a pic into your last post. Then just click your edit post button(little paper and pencil icon, 3d from left on your little control panel above each post), and you can see how it works. :)

PS: I took that pic out at hill too. Horrido, Dice, Mark, and me were all there that day. :)

They have a blackbird out here in Seattle, too. They also have a mostly-stripped version of the cockpit you can sit in. What is amazing to me, is it is so tight in there, I could barely turn around to reach the controls at my elbows, let alone if I was wearing a space suit!

The one in Seattle is the sole-surviving (of two) M-21 carrier for the D-21 drone, converted from the single-seat A-12 by removing electronics from behind the cockpit to install a systems officer station. Flush tail, pointier nose.

That's not an SR-71B, that's the A-12B, the sole two-seat A-12, called the "Titanium Goose". I can tell because it has the straight nose chine, a different-shaped rear canopy, and it doesn't have a tail cone. Kelly Johnson sat in that very rear seat for his supersonic flight. It is an utter and inexusable travesty that that aircraft is outside exposed to the elements.

Long ago I was at the Hill AFB museum, talking to a "friend" of an SR71 pilot, who, to make a long story short, said it flew from Iceland to Utah in 20 minutes. I figure that to be roughly 17k MPH.... I have also seen documentaries that state the only thing holding the SR's speed back when it first flew was the skin, they didn't want it to "melt off". Well since then, our technology in composite skins has dramatically leaped, so I was wondering if any of you have any thoughts on that? I know the shuttle hits that speed, so it is possible, though that is rocket engine fueled. But I hear those ram engines are remarkable..... While I can't say I am a 17k MPH believer, I will say: Maybe, Maybe not...?

I always thought a hybrid engine based off the design would work to power a spaceplane.

That would be 12,000MPH, roughly Mach 18, not doable in the atmosphere and the SR doesnt have enough room to carry oxidiser along with a fuel in order to fly in space even if that were the ONLY problem.
Was that "friend" L. Ron Hubbard by any chance lolol

Pardon my ignorance, but what prevents 12k MPH in the atmosphere? I have read accounts from actual pilots that said when they put their glove near the cockpit window, it would start to smolder, so I figure the plane gets good and hot....but we have material that can take that heat. And I never trust "publicly released capabilities" of anything. They say Mach 3+.....well that just means it goes faster than Mach 3.....doesn't say HOW MUCH faster!

Yes they do, Mach 3.5 lolol
The Space Shuttle comes in at Mach 25 or so and decellerating like a crazy mofo the whole time, trading speed for heat by way of friction. RCC and ceramics are the only things that will take that heat and only for a fairly short time, the Shuttle is covered in both of them. It takes a whole lotta power to over come the friction/drag at those kinds of speeds if you want to sustain that speed.
btw the Aurora contrail has been spotted again, this time in New Mexico by a civil engineer and his wife, a 25 year employee of LockMart.

Further I want to say that the Blackbird (even I never saw it flying, only in musea) is an impressive plane. Was last in Duxford (England) and there was one in the museum, American hall.
