If you watch the water you'll see a masive increase in thrust just before the plane starts to sink, something in the motor failed BIG time, no software glitch or error on this one. Just cross out "machine gun" and write in "pizza" |

I think it was determined that the pilot pulled the throttle back to idle, instead of the nozzle lever on this one. Pilot fatigue was the cause. The guy had flown a lot recently and made one critical mistake. Marge: There's someone here who I think can help you. Homer: Who, Batman? Marge: No he's a scientist. Homer: Batman's a scientist? In hover the TV lever would have already been to the rear against the gate before reverse thrust and the throttle would have been near full forward at max mil holding the water injection back just in case. The nose barely pulls up as if he was about to do the verticle climb from hover ( impresive move btw ) he would have been nudging the throttle full forward and then pushing the TV lever forward with probobly a moderate speed ( as the puffers/FCS rotated the nose up as he pulled back on the joystick ). He DOES get some forward speed going but just barely. Looks like he got TV response but no power to back it up after the first second or two ( water injection MIGHT have been enough of an increase in thrust to disturb the water like that but it's only about 2,000lbs more thrust than normal dry thrust ). If he had just pulled the throttles back, the water disturbance would never have happened. Just cross out "machine gun" and write in "pizza" |

Illusion from what I can see. Wasn't right for him to come close to hitting the stab. Reminds me of something though. I've been told they can only hover for a minute or less becuase the ECS overheats if they're not moving. The one at the airshow Labor Day looked like he hovered for a lot longer. Kept bugging me. Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure ain't fun! |

Could it be the Harrier that crashed during an airshow at Great Yarmouth in 2002? I believe it was, my brother in law was there and witnessed the crash. Harrier crash at Lowestoft Airshow A Harrier GR7 from RAF Wittering crashed into the sea during a display at Lowestoft Air Festival on Friday 2nd August 2002. A BBC reporter at the scene said the aircraft was flying about 50ft above the water when there was a loud explosion. "The Harrier, one of the most popular parts of the show, was facing the crowd about 50ft from the edge of the sand," said Guy Campbell. "It was about to do a favourite manoeuvre with the crowds - a bow - when there seemed to be some kind of huge engine loss. "The jet began to fall towards the sea then there was an explosion as the hood of the cockpit blew off and we saw the pilot fly about 50ft into the air." No-one in the crowd was injured. A spokesman for the organisers says at about fifty feet, there was apparently engine failure and the pilot ejected. The Lowestoft lifeboat brought him ashore. He is understood to be well and crowds applauded him as he waved from a helicopter which was taking him to hospital for examination. http://www.militaryairshows.co.uk/archi ... #lowestoft Fender "Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it." Here is an article on the recovery of the aircraft. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2181888.stm Friday, 9 August, 2002, 06:02 GMT 07:02 UK Crash jet recovered from sea The wreckage of the Harrier is lifted from the water Salvage experts have recovered the wreckage of a RAF Harrier jet, which crashed in front of thousands of visitors at a Suffolk air show. The plane, which will be examined by investigators, had been left stricken in the North Sea for almost a week after crashing during the Lowestoft airshow. Two previous attempts to rescue the Harrier were hampered by bad weather. Thousands of people gathered at Lowestoft seafront to see the specialist RAF recovery team lift the aircraft out of the water on Thursday. The Harrier, which cost £35m, was coming to the end of its display when the accident happened last Friday. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Anthony Cann, who is based at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire, ejected from the aircraft moments before it hit the water. He was rescued uninjured. A spokesman for the organisers said at about 50 feet, there was apparently engine failure. The harrier will be taken by barge to Lowestoft before being dismantled and transported to Cambridgeshire for a Ministry of Defence investigation. Fender "Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it." Gifted: I saw the same "sixty second hover maximum" claim on a discovery wings channel a few years back. An AV-8B pilot said it during an interview, pretty much exactly as you put it. "One way or another, your car is coming with me." |

If they new that there was something wrong, they might be looking, but as far as I can tell, the plane was a couple of thousand feet away. Notice that you see the pilot eject, and then everyone looks over. Likely they wouldn't know of the engine trouble until then, too. If you're not really paying attention to such things, then it'd be easy to miss. Not knowing much about planes, they'd probably not think anything was wrong until the pilot punched it. Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure ain't fun! |

Fender, I hope your brother in law isn't in Great Yarmouth by his own choice. We've got an office there and it's fairly unanomously considered the butt hole of Britain. One thing makes me laugh about this story.
quote:
and crowds applauded him as he waved from a helicopter which was taking him to hospital

"Hey folks, I've just dumped £35m of your taxes into the drink, give me a wave..." You don't know how much it's going to hurt until you try... |
