I read in a newspaper that the Americans leave Iceland next weekend (also from the BRAC list?) and than is Iceland a country without any militaire defence. Also for the future are no plans to make a army/airforce/navy.

I have a pretty good perspective on this.

My Family is From Iceland and Immigrated to the US in the 30's.

The Cold War was the major influence for having the bases in Iceland.

The biggest resource being lost will be in the CSAR Pave Hawks stationed at keflivik. 90% of their work is in supporting Commericial shipping related accidents. Also the P-3 orion Anti Subsurface warfare Components. I have done a few Det deployments in the past in the 15's. (freeze and get Drunk)that sums up those deployments.

Their is plenty of US navy assets transiting the region via Flotilla and Aviation.

To be Honest Iceland does not need Fighter assets. if they were to invest in anything it would be in Coast Guard-Rescue related activities.
