This will just be a continuation of the study for a new bomber. I think the B-2 will be the last true bomber we ever see, at leaste in the "heavy" catagory.

What the AF really needs is a new tanker and sooner rather than later.

John McCains ego set the tanker program back close to ten years, it'll take them forever to get it up and running. Hopefully they will just go to the KC-767 that we are almost ready to produce for Italy and Japan, it's flying and in final testing phases now.

Boomer it was more than McCains ego. He was right, many got caught with their hands in the cookie jar. They were not thinking about our nations security or the needs of the Air Force. They were thinking with their wallets. I don't lay all the blame on McCain.

Agree with Fender. Look at Darlene Druyan. She fed Boeing info in exchange for jobs for her Daughter and herself. I was working a multi million dollar source selection while she was in charge of Acquisition and it seems all she did was change the rules on us. We'd get ready to award and she would make changes that were so major we had to go back and basically start from scratch again. Took over two years to award the contract. Frustrating as hell. Didn't bother me too much to see her visit Martha Stewart-ville for 9 months. She got off easy on that sentence. It's bad enough that the general public has such a bad picture of the Government and it's spending ($600 hammers and $1000 toilet seats) but when a top executive from the DoD get's caught doing what she did, it's no wonder people complain.

The hammers and toilet seats things are myths.
Fine, so fire the folks who were cheating for personal gain and just give us a tanker! Everyone involved seems to think the two proposals were fairly close, just pick one ( the 767 ) and move on, THAT'S what's best for our country and the budget. And McCain specifically said the contract was trying to get around having the pols have so much control over the $$$ on a yearly basis, THAT'S why multi-year contracts are so hard to get them to agree to ( even though they make sense and the private sector would never dream of NOT having them ) because it takes power out of thier hands to hold over someone elses head.

I don't know about the hammers and toliet seats. I agree someone needs to get off of their butt and get us a tanker. The ones we have now are worn out and getting flown to death. That is why I said it is time the fighter community, which I am a part of, realizes other programs need attention as well.

How many fighters can you get into a C-17/C-5 to transport overseas, when the -135's aren't flyable anymore?

Exactly. It would be nearly impossible to get any fighters where you need them without tankers.

If everyone will recall, the initial hoopla over the tanker deal was whether or not the Air Force should buy or lease. The leased aircraft would end up costing the Air Force somewhere in the 5-7 Billion dollar range more, depending on whose figures you used. From there, it degenerated into what ultimately was the downfall of both top Boeing management and Ms Druyan.

If anyone is interested in the IG report, it's available on-line in its entirety. You can go here to download all five parts:
