Got this from an A-10 engine troop at Bradley. Those "Spotters" did a great job there Dutchy. This accident happened at Volkel Air Base in The Netherlands on September 22nd. The jet was an Dutch Air Force F-16B (a two seater). As they were taking off from a touch-and-go, a bird was sucked into the jet engine. The engine stalled, and the pilots tried to turn the jet around and get back on the ground, however, they lost control of the jet and ejected safely. Then, the abandoned jet veered towards the control tower and missed it by less than 3 meters. The plane hit the ground, then bounced over a Dutch Security vehicle and then crashed into a Protected Aircraft Shelter (PAS). The PAS has walls nearly 2 feet thick of reinforced concrete. That was fortunate, since there was another F-16 inside the PAS along with maintenance personnel. Luckily, no one was injured in this accident. Plane spotters near the end of the runway took the pictures of the pilots ejecting and the jet passing the control tower. It is the third F-16 crash in a few months. -July 19: F-16A mlu (mlu=midlife update) gets a flame out near the shoot and bomb range on the island Vlieland (in the north of Netherlands). Pilot get ejected savely. LawnDart math: 1 engine + 1 bird = 1 crash. Glad everyone's OK. i take it all that trash/confetti looking stuff is/was their flight pubs? That'll be a chore to collect. I was wondering what all that stuff was 30MM. If they are checklists, they sure carry a lot of paper with them. |

Approach plates, flight charts, checklists, address books, cash. You name it. When a canopy is punched, anything not bolted down is getting a blow-job (no pun intended). |

It still amazes me the damage 1 bird can do.... <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> I didn't know the 16's glide characteristics were that good...seems like it stayed upright all the way to the ground... or would the computer have been trying to keep it upright?? FCS would try to keep it pointed at the same attitude as when the pilot relesed the stick. Wheather that would still apply after ejection ( does the FCS go into a different mode? ) I have no idea. F-18 on the otherhand would attempt to recover to a 1G condition, dont know if it would roll to get there if already inverted. "Fitz" is the tits! Boomer.... the flight control system would continue to point the aircraft in the path that was selected (within reason) although some things would affect it. Trim selected at the time, the effects of the ejection may have a negative effect on the FLCS. The act of 2 ejection seats @125lbs each plus the weight of 2 fully dressed pilots and a 400lb canopy will definetly move the CG aft in a plane that already is designed to have relaxed static stability. The combination would be a nose down correction by the FLCS and contact with the ground LOL. The ejection does nothing for the rest of the systems except for a zeroize of the radio codes on the mode IV. The point would be moot for a unmanned aircraft to try and maintain control of itself without its organic interface unit. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle> <img src="http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/457/bgnrjsiiw81q1gc.jpg" border=0> Gravity....its not just a good idea, its the law. |
