This was the B-17HFF, only two were built, the second one was damaged during taxi trials and was parted out to support the first one. Problems encountered were mainly severe vibration due to the props "beating" through the turbulance created by the canard. It was hoped this layout would enable more bombs to be carried in a second bay just in front of the new wing position or greatly extend the range with a normal bomb load. As you can see more defensive firepower was added with a second power turret directly behind the pilot along with guns mounted in the canard for straffing runs. BTW this is all BS and a B-17Huge Freakin Fake <img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

Not to mention the waist gunners taking out the outboard engines!

Goose, they actually modified B-17s and B-24s to B-40 and B-41 standard, respectively, as heavy escort "fighters". The B-17/40s had an additional turret at the radio operator's station, as well as either twin .30s or twin .50s mounted at each waist gunner position. The bomb bay was used for ammunition rather than bombs. The system didn't really work, and the only thing to come out of the program was the chin turret which was made standard on normal B-17s.

Crushed under his own mental block...
