hey whats up everyone? Good here, but i have a question. what does everyone think of scanner radios and the like. I was going to buy one because all the time planes fly over and I would like to hear them once in a while. Well that's all for now. thanks |

I personally think a scanner is a good investment. Even a bottom of the line scanner will allow you to hear police/fire/ambulance calls as well as local weather. From there it depends on what you want to spend. In general, the more you spend the more you will pick up. You can pick up anything from fast-food drive throughs, cell/cordless phones, race pitcrews, football coaches, airport tower freqs, aircraft freqs, CB and HAM radios, radio stations, television channels (no cable,) etc. Just look into the freqs you would want to pick up, and the freqs covered by the scanner you want to purchase. Just keep in mind that some aircraft use secure radios for certain transmissions, and given freqs will have given ranges, and so on. Do some reasearch...either way I feel it is useful to own one. For example, you hear sirens, wonder what is going on, you pick up the local emergency bands and here there was a robbery at the gas station. --Raven "Work Hard, Party Hard, Hardly Sleep" |

We've got two scanners at my house. You can get them at radio shack, or order them online I guess, but I reccomend radio shack. You can also get at radio shack (i think) a list of the local frequencies. if it's not there check your local hobby store. |

Interesting..I thought i was the only one interested in Comms and Realtime intel <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> I have a HAM License and Mod all my radios. Their Great For everything Stated above as well as BS'n with People around the Globe. |

thanks, i am goin to get one now, if i find some money. just curious if anyone would now the freqs for warthogs based at whiteman afb. they fly over pretty much every week and used to be based right next to our house. |

jetman, scanners are a lot of fun. I am a Chief of a volunteer fire department here in Ga and have a portable radio with scan function. I couldn't recommend any particular one, just all depends on your finicial capabilities. The main thing we have trouble with is chasers, people who here our tones and follow us. Hopefully you wont follow in this dangerous footstep. Most anywhere you buy scanners have a list of frequencies and will program them for you. As you know, some military freq's are restricted. You can catch some pretty funny traffic at times. And I believe you can get low abnd freq's programmed which is where military operates on vhf. You can also get a handheld scanner. So, go for it. |

I have a Uniden Beartcat handheld scanner (don't have the model number handy...there are various models with different ranges) and I used to be able to pick up the expiditer freqs at D-M as well as the tower. Also, chasing police and fire/rescue is not the brightest move...but we used to pick up the county sherrif's freqs and do a little storm chasing when I lived back home. --Raven "Work Hard, Party Hard, Hardly Sleep" |

thanks for the replies. I would love one, and now i have some money. i remember using my grandpa's scanner once and me and my friends picked up these two people having phone sex. it was so funny. that is incentive enough to buy one!!! but seriously i think being able to hear the emergency freqs is good just for hearing stuff. later |

Check out 138.400, 149.100, and 149.525 in the AM Mode. These are active A-10 air to air freqs used by the 303rd TFS at Whiteman. They are used quite often and you should hear some good comms here. |

Forgot to mention on the earlier post; if you buy a scanner with the intentions of monitoring military aircraft, make sure it covers the 225-406 MHz range. This UHF band is used extensively. Also make sure that the scanner you buy is capable of toggling to AM Mode while tuning the VHF freqs mentioned in my previous post. This is important because any scanner will receive that band but most will not toggle to AM on those VHF frequencies. This feature is essential if you want to monitor the A-10 activity. Hope this helps you out... |

awsome! i actually didn't get a scanner, but my neighbor has one and i am over there constantly. Thanx for the freqs do u think i can get it from 60 mi away? i really don't know too much, but my neighbor does so i'll also ask him. thanx |

Well, it depends on the aircraft's altitude, as well as your scanner and antenna setup. I routinely catch comms in the Truman Bravo and Charlie MOA's with a BC9000XLT and modest outdoor antenna. You should have some luck if you try those freqs. Be patient, sometimes there is no activity for several days. |
