today while i was at a hobby store i saw an unusaul model. it was called the 'sr-71 penetrator and xr-7 thunderjet' it was a sr-71 fairly straight forward but silver and canards, but the wierd thing was, riding piggy back on it was a manned aircraft called the xr-7. simmilar in shape though much smaller thean boomer 'auora' pics. trhe box claimed it could do mach 7. is this an experimental aircraft or somthing the manufacturers made up?

indeed, indeed, indeed

It's the XR-75 from Testors, and I have those models, but I swapped the XR-7 piggy back for an external combustion Recon UAV of my own design <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

"somthing the manufacturers made up?" Not many people know for sure. There have been reported sightings in the southwest of this plane (the large XR-75 mother ship) a number of years ago first in white paint then later black, and a report that someone accidentaly saw a sat photo, on a desk in the Pentagon, of Groom lake which showed 3 white triangles (what it would look like in a med resolution pic) parked on the tarmac. There was another report by a couple of civies that were brought out to the base to do some emergency special electricle(?)work of sometype on one of the buildings, when they were up on the roof they saw one of these planes and described the unusual landing gear that the model has ( a LARGE single main pogo type gearset something similar to the U-2, with outriggers under the engine pods and a conventional nose gear). I personaly dont put much stock in thier story but who knows?

It's SR-75. I've got the box sitting right here. There have also been reports that the aircraft was sighted in western Oregon, too. Names such as "Senior Citizen" and "Brilliant Buzzard" have been attributed to the mystery aircraft supposedly sighted.

I wonder if he's confusing the box with one of the SR-71 ,D-21 combo models?

Italeri and Testors sometimes sell each other's kits in their own boxes. I'm not sure who orginally made the SR-75 & XR-7 model. I first saw it over here when I was still in high school (and didn't buy it at the time).

Box says "Testors" on it, an no Italeri labels, which they usually have on it if it's a shared kit. Has anyone seen an XR-7 in an Italeri box? Beware the SR-71/D-21 combos, the "SR-71" needs to be modified into an M-21, by sharpening its nose and chopping the tail. Only the two M-21s (modified two-seat A-12s) ever carried the drones.

model companies often sell or lease the molds to other companies when they feel like they have run thier course sales wise. But Italeri is a fine company, I dont know why they would make such a mistake as to call it SR-71 ! JSF could you get the "kit #" off that box sometime? I'd like to try and look it up.
