Something I read on a LOMAC forum Chad.

http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_ ... a&id=zzocz

CVW-11 will soon meet up with the USS Nimitz which left San Diego this morning and marks a huge milestone in US Naval Aviation history: no more F-14's.

For the first time in probably over 20 years a Carrier Air Wing will deploy without F-14's on her decks.

That means 48 F/A-18 Hornets all together between C, E and F models!

This includes VFA-41 "Black Aces" flying F/A-18F's and VFA-14 "Tophatters" flying two-seat F/A/18E's. Both squadrons have just recently converted over from F-14's.

VFA-41 has a great website:

I hate the VFA designation.

VF-41 was a historic squadron.

In 1981 Captain Henry "Hank" Kleeman, skipper of VF-41 became to first US Naval aviator to draw blood with the F-14, downing a Libyan SU-22 "Fitter"

26 years Later, VF-41 became to first F-14 squadron the drop bombs in anger over Kosovo.............

The proud thoroughbred VF designation is about to be gone forever.........

Is it me or does the F-18E/F look like a flying ford taurus staion wagon? The F-14 looks like a predator, the F-18E/F looks like well...........a station wagon.

I think the Hornet A and C are pretty aircraft, but the oversized E/F are ungainly looking.

The F-14 has a sort of majestic, beauty, just like an eagle does as it's diving for the kill(the bird, not the plane). The F/A-18 (All of them!) just look like their namesakes: bugs which are going to be squashed!

Mudd,

Have you ever read "Black Aces High" by Rober Wilcox? You'd definitely like it because its about VF-41 in Kosovo '1998-'99, check it out if you haven't read it, its a great book. Nice pics by the way.
