Every fifth round (I think) of the M61A1 Vulcan is a tracer.

20mm does have a tracer according to the color code charts but I have never seen it. 30mm has no tracer. In aerial gunning you figure a 3000+ yard slat shot your burst is over before the first round impacts. Targeting computer takes over for tracer and gives impact point and aiming reference. 20mm usually fly straight TP or HEI. 30mm is usually straight HEI for personnel and light vehicle targets or mixed HEI and API for anti-armor.

Without weapons its just another airliner

I can remember seeing all kinds of early test footage with A-10's using tracer.

You sure the base rd's don't have a tracer element?

Hey bro-

Nope, no tracers. Might have been a DT&E thing, but I can say that today there aren't any in the rounds we carry.

Hey Mud whats the difference in the trajectories of the HEI and the API in terms of where the impact point is and where you actually aimed for ? Does it cause you to adjust for a given target ?

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

I forget what the difference in mils is, but it becomes an aiming issue over 12,000' slant range. The API round has a boat-tail shape, while the HEI does not, and there is a slight weight difference between the rounds. When combat mix is selected from the LASTE weapons submenu, the pipper is giving you a solution for the API round. The HEI will fall short of that. So yes, it does affect your combat offsets for desired weapon effect against a certain target depending on slant range, dive angle, etc.
