yeah they dragged the old C-17 proto(the YC-15) out of storage to use it's airframe for this test program.

Let's see...V-22; C-130; C-17...let's call it a C-237!

they're also "noodleing" a C-130 based on the Fairy Rotodyne concept, and the "Quadrotor" a C-130 sized 4 rotor tiltrotor like Osprey. Also are working a GPS guided unmanned supplier about half the size of Herc, jet powered that can do vert landings and takeoffs right to the foxholes, early versions will be manned.

Tilt engine technology is only going to work with jets, if at all.

MAYBE ducted fans, but the exposed blade rotors create so much down wash that they are a major hazard to ground personnel(and themselves due to kicked up debris and brown outs), and greatly restrict the tactical applications of the aircraft. The V-22 generates the equivelant wind of a Cat 4 hurricane. An aircraft the size of a C-130, let alone a C-17, would generate quite massive downwash, and would brown out constantly when in hovering descent or ascent.

Forum members, perhaps you can help me here, when prototype YC15 was being flown, Boeing were developing an over wing jet, very much like the Antonov AN72/74, (nato report name "Coaler"), could you e-mail me some pictures of it and some specifications please.

oh, the C17 is here to stay now that the C141 is being retired, perhaps it is also time to look for a replacement for the C5B Galaxy. and if they do decide to replace the C130, perhaps Boeing can revive the over wing STOL jet that Antonov copied to great success

the "overwing" plane was Lockheed YC-14 I think. That "supplier" I mentioned uses pulse jets for the verticle element and turbines for forward flight. It will have little ability to hover, it will simply drop in to land and pop up to take off.

thanks for the pic

I think the YC14 uses flaps behind the jet exhausts, rather than pulse jets. These flaps cause the jet efflux to stick to them when in the down position, combined with the aerodynamic effect from the underside of the wing to give the vertical lift element, very much like the antonov.

Coaler proto flew 2 or more years AFTER the YC-14 and YC-15.

The carrier borne AEW version of Coaler had liftjets in the tail.

i thought the normal coaler only had ESTOl [extremely short take off landing] the takeoff distance was only supposed to be like 100m+the plane length and the landings like 60m

MK-84-2000lbs of game ending power

JSF> that would not surprise Me, the way the design is on the Coaler. I have to say, if it were C-130 or Antonov, Id have to take the Antonov.

havent Antonov designed a new 4 engined turboprop aircraft?

yeah JSF but they needed the lift jets for the AEW version to operate from a carrier. All moot now since that plane (the AEW) was canceled in favor of a E-2Hawkeye lookalike which was also cancelled, then revived, then cancelled and is now on hold lol.

The AN-70, basically a cross between the C-17 and the A400
