Was reading about F/A 22 production. It says full rate production is slated for 2006. And that this would be 90 aircraft. 276(hopefully I hear) are to be procured including 58 LRIP aircraft. So basically by the end of 2007(assuming another 90 are built in 2007)production ceases. Can this be right? Or am I missing something? Thx Rick |

OK I just returned from Tydall AFB FL. I was there TDY with the lawn darts from Shaw. Anyway I got a up close and personal tour of the F-22. The DCC assigned to A/C 018, the only one Tyndall has right now gave us a great tour of the Raptor. First impressions were good. The jet is deceptively large. It does not look big until you are up on it. I was impressed by several features which I will not get into but I will say this. Loading munitions in the weapons bays will be tricky. The A/C belly is close to the ground and may remind old loaders of what it was like to load F-4'S. The vectoring nozzles look like a nightmare to work on but I could be wrong. Overall I liked the jet. It may not do what it is tauted to do and it may be over priced. However it was like looking at a proto type sports car. Pure sex. Fender Hands clear. All switches off, safe or normal. Gun hot or cold? No limit, you bet. |

well, they need to start making some new planes and they need to do it fast, the Aircraft in the inventory are getting old, it would be very nice to put out our best for the new line, like the F-22, not the second rate like the F-35. Dear Abby, I joined the Navy to see the world. I've seen it. Now, how do I get out? |

The YF-23 is in a museum where it belongs, it was stealthier but I believe it had higher drag( due to the exterior "S" shape intakes where-as the F-22s intakes had thier "S" shape internally) and it was certainly less maneuverable (no vector thrust nozzles among other things) The YF-22 blended maneuverability with stealth, the YF-23 put almost all it's eggs in the stealth basket. If an easy counter to stealth were found we'd be in big trouble with the YF-23. the F-22 is the fighter, the F-35 is the multirole, there is no "second class" there , they are just designed from the ground up to do different things. Everyone gives the F-35 crap but that' the future of the USAF. Though I hate to say it the F-35 looks like it will have far fewer growing pains than its big brother the 22. with the production problems of the F-22 and the OT&E problems left and right running WAY over budget I see the F-22 staying very small in numbers and never fully replacing the F-15C/E fleets. I see instead the F-35 coming up and running in a few short years and though with lower performance that little lawn dart will make bigger waves than the Craptor. Ugly but Well Hung |
