Air Force Times had a piece a few weeks back describing the slow rebuilding of Iraqs Air Force. Supposedly, it's starting with a transport squadron and a helicopter-support unit, equipped withC-130Bs and UH-1Hs, respectively.

Iraq doesnt need anything better than this:

Helos: Hips and Hooks for vert work and light attack, they're cheap.
Air transport:C-130s rugged will last a long time
Fighter plane: Mirage, cheap and easily shot down
Main army transport: Chevy pick-ups, cheap and easily shot down
Shoulder arms: Ruger 10/22
Side arms: Any Ruger .22 for ammo compatability for the shoulder arms
MBT: the BIG UPS trucks, cheap and easily shot down
APC: A trailer for the UPS truck

CPA projections for the composition of the Iraqi Air Force included:
-- Six C-130B Hercules transport aircraft by April 2005,
-- 16 Iroquois helicopters by April 2005, and
-- A squadron of light reconnaissance aircraft by late summer 2004.

We could do with Iraq like we do with many other FMS customers: the F-5 Tiger II. Small, cheap, available.

Ground-wise, we still have stocks of M-48 and M-60 tanks, not to mention 551 Sheridans. For APCs, we can give them all the old M113s that we replaced with M-2s in our own force. Tons of old AM General M-151 1/4 ton jeeps, as well as the old Dodge M-880 series and Chevy M-1008/1009 CUCV series that we don't use anymore. Oh, and give them all the M561 Gamma Goats we have! That'd work for light trans. For heavier trans, the M-35 2.5 ton series as well as the M-54 5 ton series would work well, since we've replaced all those in our own forces with the M-1029 FMTV/M-923 5 ton/ and M-977 HEMETTs.

For weapons, I'm sure we still have tons of stocks of old M-16A1s, M-60s and M1911s for sidearms.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>, just to have a credible self defense force, <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

why does Iraq need a credible defence force? Iran? Re-arming Iraq just sets up the next round of trouble over there. Give the IADF a carrier to float in the Tigress, they'll take care of things lol

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> So, what are we talking about? M4 rifles? (Rumor I read has USA buying M4's to replace M16A2's made by H&K - let's be honest the Army only goes to 300 yards in the qual range, no need for an A2 anymore.)

I was under the impression that Colt made the M16A2, I guess I could be wrong though. Anyway IMHO I think that Iraq need a security force to protect its citizens from themselves, nothing more for now. Iraq has WAY too many problems to worry about an army.

I vote for equiping the IDAF with Grippens. They are small, cheap, and capable, really a modern day F-5. Plus we get good PR by not forcing them to buy American, and neither the French nor the Russians get the contract.
