At the Controls: F-117A Stealth Fighter, by Jon Lake: "The effectiveness of F-117A's RAM skin was demonstrated in an unusual manner during the Gulf War, when groundcrews started finding dead bats around the tails of hangared aircraft. The unfortunate creatures had clearly flown "full tilt" into the Black Jet's tailfins, which their high frequency 'sonar' had been unable to detect." Edited by - tritonal on Jul 27 2004 11:46 PM |

Yup. As mentioned in the excellent book "Skunk Works", whether or not stealth technology would actually work in combat was not really known. When they started finding dead bats next to the planes in the hangars at Khamis Mushait, they pretty much had their answer. |

Don't let the nature nuts hear about this, or else ground crews will have to start setting up radar reflectors on the F117 in order to protect the poor creatures. You look as lost as a bastard child on Fathers day. |
