The F15ABCD has always had a a2g capability, However It is not something that we train for, but we have had the Equipment todo so and those items are still carried in the To's
The Software for a2g for iron Bombing has been in the F15 since day 1 and it does get improved with software updates. Ive done plenty of Blue Death and Simulated hardball Lofts in the F15.
It has been a contingency planned into the aircrafts design. even tho the aircraft has been primarily the Air Supremecy fighter. what hte airforce is eluding too now is that They wan the Crews to start getting their feet wet in the Iron dropping, Which can and will prove handy in situations to support Needs by planners.
theres been a few instances where strictly fighter crews have had to aid Ground trops or Airmen down and only had the Gun available.
20mm IS only good for light supression, and light skinned vehichles.
Yes the Eagle Mafia may get a little pissy but those of us in the Squadron commnad and Wing King age group, have done the A2g role with the Eagle.
Back in the 80's it was still taughtand maintained for Lofting Nukes.
Some of the Strictly a2a intercept F4 Squadrons also had a backup role with a2g.
Another thing to keep in mind isthat we havnt had a A2A engagement since WWGULF1, The balkans was nothing more than the Planets alighning giveing a couple dudes a sliver of luck.
With what we are dealing with today, it is expected to not have much of a a2a threat level, unless of course we go and smite the NK Child Pornographer or mix it up with China. We can expect that if that oes take place, the Ops temp for OCA/DCA is going to stop 15's from packing Iron.
The Airforce is just looking to maximizing the available aircraft for tasking, instead of Supporting plane that are really good at the CAS role. With 30 year old fighters its getting tough to meet commitments, and as of late it is purely driven by Air to Mud needs.
Been counters are trying to define a strategy. Dont think they know or care what is best the best expense for what were are asked to do.
