I read this tonight http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/news/2004/09/mil-040913-afpn02.htm. Seems like the F-15C is going to get an A-to-G role, is this new?

The F15ABCD has always had a a2g capability, However It is not something that we train for, but we have had the Equipment todo so and those items are still carried in the To's

The Software for a2g for iron Bombing has been in the F15 since day 1 and it does get improved with software updates. Ive done plenty of Blue Death and Simulated hardball Lofts in the F15.

It has been a contingency planned into the aircrafts design. even tho the aircraft has been primarily the Air Supremecy fighter. what hte airforce is eluding too now is that They wan the Crews to start getting their feet wet in the Iron dropping, Which can and will prove handy in situations to support Needs by planners.

theres been a few instances where strictly fighter crews have had to aid Ground trops or Airmen down and only had the Gun available.

20mm IS only good for light supression, and light skinned vehichles.

Yes the Eagle Mafia may get a little pissy but those of us in the Squadron commnad and Wing King age group, have done the A2g role with the Eagle.

Back in the 80's it was still taughtand maintained for Lofting Nukes.

Some of the Strictly a2a intercept F4 Squadrons also had a backup role with a2g.

Another thing to keep in mind isthat we havnt had a A2A engagement since WWGULF1, The balkans was nothing more than the Planets alighning giveing a couple dudes a sliver of luck.

With what we are dealing with today, it is expected to not have much of a a2a threat level, unless of course we go and smite the NK Child Pornographer or mix it up with China. We can expect that if that oes take place, the Ops temp for OCA/DCA is going to stop 15's from packing Iron.

The Airforce is just looking to maximizing the available aircraft for tasking, instead of Supporting plane that are really good at the CAS role. With 30 year old fighters its getting tough to meet commitments, and as of late it is purely driven by Air to Mud needs.

Been counters are trying to define a strategy. Dont think they know or care what is best the best expense for what were are asked to do.

Makes sense! You always hear the phrase not a pound for air to ground, guess they were wrong. I bet the new role will deflate a few egos in the E world.

What would it take to hang a JDAM on each wing? Not a lot I can't imagine.

well any GPS package is simple, DME to Target and drop when in its WEZ the Bomb is autonomous.

Any aircraft can be a GPS bomber with minimum modification. believe it or not, it actually takes more hardware and associated gear to make a Laser do its thing.

And GPS is not suseptable to enviromental conditions. Bombs are always in LOSof satelites, so urban features dont degrade the symbol, and weather has little to no effect on the radio signal.

Their has been the threat of GPS jammers, but so far these systems have been dropped in GPSD jamming areas and they worked flawlessly.

However like the LASER GBU, there is still a narrow Window of employment, that if you do not hold within a few degrees of the course it could cause a smart bomb to go stupid, in both energy expense in manuever and in rate of Degrade decay.

I thought the data for AG work had been squeezed out of the F-15 computers years ago for more UTR algorithems or something.

Un True, , The Radars have been improved in both Hardware and Software.

Would take an Avionics Tech 20 Mins to Update any needs or modifications that have all ready been Proofed.

I heard that the Eagle is so good at A2A that nobody dares challenge them anymore. Thus, the Eagle is being utilized as an A2G platform as a result of their A2A prowess. So, basically, what Mudd said...

ATTACK!!!!!!!

LOL, uh yeah, Except,When you start quoting me ..the world must truly be doomed!!!!

Seriously though when is the last time a Crusty Eagle Driver Degraded a Bomb...

Proficiency is everything. Warfighting is a perishable skill, I could imagine the hell it would be to get these guys back in the saddle dropping inget. Wonder if anyone would Cert before Next assignment (slander off)

Anyways the jet still has the capability back in the cold war backup plan was still inthe planners minds.

To be a Stud. Ya gotta do it. Whats proofed in Weapons Test doesnt allways translate to operational truth.
