Hey guys after looking back on the airforce museum site about the yf-12. Do you guys think it would have become operational if in the 1960 there was access to small diameter gps smart bombs. It seems ideally suited for the roll of high speed tactical assination if you will. Meaning taking out high value targets like Saddam or others who move around frequently.

The YF-12 was the interceptor version of the Blackbird. It looks almost exactly like the SR-71.

THE ONE PROBLEM I WAS TOLD WAS IT COULD GO FASTER THEN ITS WEAPONS FOR DEFENSE,BUT YOUR RIGHT GPS BOMBS

I always wondered if that camera equipment would give enough space for a large enough bay for a nuke. That would have made the Reds crap thier pants worse than the B-1, I'm sure.

They actually had plans for a nuke-armed A-12 as an escort strike aircraft, to take-down air defense grids. The missile was a ground-attack varient of the GAR-9. The YF-12 was to be armed with the GAR-9, a nuclear anti-bomber formation missile that was the precursor to the AIM-54 Phoenix, which it resembled.
