OH MY GOODNESS I AM GOING TO SEE BOB BLAIR AS SOON AS I GET BACK FROM NELLIS. WE HAD TALKED ABOUT GETTING IT BUT I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE A BONEYARD JET AND THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO PAINT AND PUT UNIT ID'S ON IT. By the way if any of you get a chance to go to the New England air Museum I think you would be really impressed. prior to its destruction in the late 70's by a twister it had an unbelievable array of aircraft, most of them rare heavies. considering the state of Navy procurement and the f-18 short commings what would happen if these aircraft had to be pulled out of mothballs politically to the navy leadership. |

They won't be pulled out. They're being scrapped pretty quickly, which would present a much bigger embarassment for the administration. I do wonder, I remember hearing that they'd managed to preserve the tooling thus far. Would they try to bring it back, or would they just ramp up Hornet production? Now I know f-all about jets but that is one lovely looking bag of bolts. The tail art looks well smart to boot... It's a bit sad that it's going to be a museum piece, but it's better than being scrapped. Mind you none of the above are better than punching a hole in the air at Mach 2 though... Yeah the story goes that there was a party. It always starts with a bloody party. Anyhoo, the CO's wife got kinda gooned. Let me back up. VF-143 the Pukin Dogs was originally the Griffons. They have in their ready room a stuffed dog with real wings.It is their mascot and has often been the object of neffarious attempts of chicannery and thievery. A real sweet sweet taxidermy job. I have in fact seen it with my own two female ogleing devices. Back to the story. At this party (whether it was realy the Skippers wife or not I dont know, thats just the story I got) this drunken lady looked at the units mascot and exclaimed that it didnt look like a Griffon, but that it looked in fact like a drunk Pukin Dog. Wallah the name stuck and the unit became what it is today. Thats my story and I am stickin' to it. By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson |

And to answer the question above. The Military, any branch in fact, has the right to reclaim any part of any aircraft at any time. Even an old century series fighter on a stick you see out in the middle of nowhere is subject to reclamation. The New England Air Museum recently lost its B47 back to the Air Force Museum. Our B47 had been damaged in the tornado and the museum was unable to replace the forward main strut that snapped clean in two. The Air Force Museum needed some parts on ours that were good and so they sent a truck up and thieved the B47. But we got some sweet parts for our B29 in return. The names they come up with are all ways lightweight and forgetable. Only when somebody gets totally rat-arsed and says the imortal phrase "... my ass. That looks nothin like a ... it looks like a ---" will something be christened properly... I'm sure somebody thought the Thunderbolt was a good name, and it is (before I get flamed alive), but it ain't as good a name as the Warthog. "A .44 magnum beats 4 Aces everytime..." |
