Just dropped my son off in PHX to go to school. Has a nice apartment 3 miles south of Luke AFB. Watching the air traffic from the kid's patio was quite entertaining each night. I mentioned that to my F-15 brother-in-law who stated he did RTU at Luke. What's RTU?

RTU= Replacement Training Unit. Or a unit that does conversion training into a specific aircraft type. Also called FTU, or Formal Training Unit. Navy calls it a RAG, or Replacement Air Group. Luke was where the first F-15s opened up shop in 1974 with the 555th. They trained single-seat Eagles there up until the late 80s or early 90s. Eagles left Luke altogether when E-models from the 550th and 555th closed up shop in 1995, moving the jets to Seymour Johnson.
