I was going through some of my Dad's old photos and I came across this one and it made me wonder why we don't see static displays like this any more?

Where was this on static? On a show or just for the picture?
Great arsenal of weapons/bombs.

This isn't a static display( at least not a public one!)...as a kid i asked aircrsft manufacturers for and received tons of airplane pics. This was a fairly common shot showing the wide diversity of ordnance their jets could carry..I have seen this one and a similiar one from Republic Aviation for the F-105.I will testify that Airshows aren't what they once were. As a 12 years old I attended the 1956 National Aircraft Show in Oklahoma CIty. The Thunderbird'(in F-84F's) and the Blue Angels (in brand new Grumman F-11F's) flew back-to-back
shows....I was inside a brand new YC-130A (tell you how long ago this was??) when the ground began to shake...i ran outside to see what the cause was....12 x B-36's hooked up to 12 x KB-50 tankers in formation at what I would estimate at less than 2000' made a fly-by. The finish of the Thompson and Bendix trophy races used the runway as the finish....F-8 Crusaders won both as I recall. Hundreds of static displays and lots of flybys and demonstrations...and all the manufactirers had terrific "Stuff" to give away. It was that 2-day weekend which captured my imagination and set me on a path to be a military aviator. I wonder if kids today take the same thrill away for our airshows...i had this conversation with more than one general officer late in my career....back when the T-38 (ptui!!!)equipped Thunderbirds had a rule if THEY flew NO ONE else could...what a miserable show that was..and I did a lot of static displays (with both A-7's an A-10's and talked to many people at shows about what they thought...they agreed.. Well...enough old memories...Cheers All!!

I'm not sure if this was set up for a public display or not but I was told that the picture was taken during one of my Dad's TDYs or assignments to Florida. The image stamp the back of the photo seems to comfirm this but I have no way to say for sure

I do remember seeing simular displays as a youngster but as an Air Force Brat you tend to forget that you have access to things that the general public never gets to see.

I've been told that the Tornadoes at Holloman will occsionally pull out a display like that for VIPs. We put CBUs and our GBUs out in front of the planes for the show when I was there. Much fun. They had it cordoned off, but they should do things like that more often.

What's on the yellow trailers back by the wing tips? They're bombs, but what kind?

I guess it would take too much time and ramp space to display everything the Hog can carry<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
