…But don’t have the talent to make it come true! I photographed a couple more A-10 doors yesterday and it got me thinking, if I had a door what would I like on it.

I work for HQ/ACC DRA10, and as such, work issues for all Active, Guard, and Reserve units. I would like a mural, which would have elements from every A-10 squadron, past and present. Now how could I do this and still keep it small, to fit on a ladder door or say an 8X10 print?

My dream (vision) is a “Conan” era scene set on a rocky hilltop overlooking a battlefield. In the background are jagged snowcapped mountains and it’s either late afternoon or early morning and the scene is heavy with orange and red tones. Half the sky (and scene) is filled with a massive thunderstorm with twin lightning bolts (thunderbolt II) striking the far mountains and lighting the valley below. There is a battle raging with the “good guys” trying to storm a “doom” style castle and the sun is huge and smoke and arrows fill the sky.

Standing in the center of the hill is Horatio Hog (The A-10 mascot) all buffed out and wearing some type of Conan style garb, carrying a GAU-8A cannon. Blood trickles from small cuts on his arms and chest, and maybe little clouds of condensation floats from his nostrils. I would like Horatio to have the same look as he does on this door…

<img src="http://www.warthogpen.com/art_files/doorart49.jpg" border=0>

Standing around Horatio is servile creatures each an active A-10 unit mascot, and each drawn in the same Conan style. He could be holding a spike-studded lease with Davis-Monthan’s 354th FS Bulldog straining at the end. A massive dragon (357th DM squadron) taking-off headed for the battle.

A shiny black panther with glowing yellow eyes and rippling muscles (representing the 81st out of Spangdahlem AB Germany) stands on a rock to one side and on the other side is Pegasus, in full war gear, pawing at the ground (51st Osan AB Korea). Hovering above this group is an awesome Flying Tiger with claws and teeth bared (23rd Pope NC.).

Add a few more creatures to the scene to capture all the active units like a caveman to represent the “icemen” from Eielson AB Alaska and a “Tigershark” for the 75th FS Pope AFB.

I would love to be able to capture all units, squadrons, past and present. I know to do this all elements could not be equal and that could be part of the fun. Imagine the scene I described above (or close to it) but with only a few large detailed creatures to represent the major commands, and all the squadrons, units, past and present, “inside” the mural itself. Half the fun would be to find and identify and the mascots within the painting!

Just a few examples are, the now deactivated 70th FS “White Knights”, Moody AFB GA. There would be a white knight somewhere within the scene. A small buffed-out bumble-bee to represent the 47th FS Barksdale AFRB LA. This would be a cool “lets find Waldo” type painting that covers the entire A-10 fleet, past and present!

O’well I don’t have the talent and it would be a massive undertaking but it would be COOL!! I’ve taken enough of you time already so as I said in the beginning… I have a dream!”

Wow, Dice... I had some awesome mental pictures while reading about your 'vision'. Sounds like a <u>great</u> idea.

It doesn't seem like it would be that hard for a talented artist to pull out. It would just require 1) getting a list of all the elements and mascots together, 2) sketching out the way each was going to be represented, 3) sizing each of them depending on their position(s) within the entire A-10 fleet, and 4) positioning each of them strategically throughout the mural, so that each of them gets adequate representation.

They've done this type of thing with (showing off my less mature side now) comic heroes in big posters, putting 50-100 superheroes and villains together in a big "group photo" of sorts, sizing them all relative to each other, etc., as well as cartoon characters. Disney and Warner Bros., for example, have made murals with nearly <u>all</u> of their characters being represented, in different positions to one another.

Here's an example (no jokes either <img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle>):

<img src="http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/88/046_C92985.jpg" border=0>

I know it's not the same <i>setting</i> that you have in mind, just trying to give people a visual representation of what I <i>think</i> you're getting at.

Bottom line, it could be done, just a matter of finding someone with the time and talent to make it worth viewing.

KingFrogger, that's the style I had in my minds-eye, the superhero style like the one you posted. It would be fairly easy for someone who had the talent but like you said gathing the info would take a little time and work.

I could do it on a computer but finding the images, editing, and putting it all together would be quite a job! I just had this idea/image in my head so I wrote it down in case I ever do find some who could do it, within my price range, I would have my thoughts written down somewhere.

DICE,

WE DID SOMETHING LIKE THAT WITH THE OLD "23TFW'S" MASCOTS.
74TH WAS A TIGER,THE 75TH A SHARK AND BECAUSE WE WERE THE VANGUARDS IN THE 76TH WE USED THE "HOG" WITH A SHIELD.
HAD THEM STANDING LIKE THE 3 MUSKETEER'S
I'LL HAVE TO ASK AROUND I DONT HAVE THE T-SHIRT ANYMORE.I'LL ASK HUTCH OR ANOTHER LOAD TOAD ONE OF THEM DREW IT.

BUT I CAN PICTURE THAT DOOR. IT MIGHT NOT FIT ON A LADDER DOOR,BUT MAN IF THEY DO RETIRE THE OLD GIRL'S THEN A PAINTING WOULD BE THE WAY TO GO.
THERE MUST BE 10,000+ HOG LOVER OUT THERE THAT WOULD DOLE OUT $$$$$$ FOR A COPY.

I HAVE 2 ART STUDENTS THAT I SUPPORT EVERY MONTH IN TEXAS AND THEY CAN DRAW.I'LL PICK THEIR BRAINS

BUT DICE THAT WOULD BE AWESOM!!!!!!!!!

I think you guys are right about it not fitting on a ladder door unless a prespective could be worked-out to use all the vertial surface. <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

Maybe Dru Blair could do us a painting with an A-10 pulling up in the distance into the classic "iron cross" with us (the viewer) standing behind all the A-10 mascots as they watch the last flight of the Warthog.

Horatio with a lowered Avenger over his sholder, a white knight on a rearing gray hourse, and all the other members in dirty and torn outfits on a battered battlefield but, still standing tall and proud!

I know I should not have eaten the worm at the bottom of the bottle! <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

Regarding the $$$, Dice...

I'd be willing to bet that if/when you got this off the ground, if you could put the whole thing on a t-shirt and market it on this site (as well as to active duty members of all the A-10 squadrons, etc.) you'd quickly recoup the money and then some.

I'd definitely be willing to shell out a few bucks for a cool logo if it turns out the way I think it would. It sounds very cool to me.

Like prkiii said, keep us posted.

KingFrogger, if you knew me better you would know I get myself into a lot of "projects" and it takes me a while to catch-up. I have caught-up on all but one right now and it's the next thing on my list.

Over a year agao a10stress gave me five reels of 16mm flim which contain some historic footage of the A-10, from gun fire testing to a reel on the two seat NAWs A-10. I'm going to get these transfered to DVD so everyone can enjoy them. This is going to cost me a few hundred $$ so....

I do like this idea as a painting (like Goose said), tee-shirt and other uses, so I will keep this one in mind, and work on the idea but, you may not hear about it for a while. If you ever wonder where I'm at on the project just ask and I will update you.

I can just see the picture in my mind and, as Goose also said, this would be great for anyone who's worked, flew, or just likes the A-10, from the day she rolled off the line to the day she does go to the boneyard.

Goose if you could talk to your artist friends and get some ideas from them that would be great.

JEEZZEE Dice!! if it wernt for the spelling, I would have doubted the writer!!LOL. You have a GENUINE talent for this creative writing stuff cause it ALL comes from the "minds eye" the rest is just getting it down on paper (or just dictating it into a little personal recorder for some lacky to type) visualization is the key, and buddy YOU got it in spades, kudos sir!

I'LL SEE WHAT I CAN COME UP WITH.

BUT YOU KNOW IF WE COULD GET JUST AN IDEA ON PAPER,AND OUT OF MY MIND.
I KNOW WE'RE SEEING THE SAME PICTURE

ALL THE MASCOTS,IN A LOOSE LINE,LOOKING LIKE A SQUAD OF MARINES IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC IN WW2
THEY BEEN FIGHTING FOR DAY'S AND THEY FINALLY GET RELIEVED,AFTER THE FIGHTINGS DONE.
A COUPLE WITH CIG'S,SOME RESTING ON THERE GAU'S,OTHERS LEANING ON AGM-65'S. THE WHITE KNIGHT ON HIS HORSE,THE VANGUARD RESTING WITH HIS SHIELD WITH BATTLE DAMAGE,ETC......
EVERYONE KNOWS HOW THEY WOULD DEPIC THERE MASCOT AFTER A RAGGING BATTLE.

I JUST THINK ITS BEEN YOUR BEST IDEA DICE,BUT T-SHIRTS WOULDNT DO IT JUSTICE,PRINTS AND POSTERS FRAMED ON A OLD HOG KEEPERS WALL WOULD BE A KEEPSAKE

All you young people look at me..I'm what happens when you drop-out! *My public service plug for the day LOL!*

Thanks for the kind words and belive me, the image I see in my head would make one heck of a tribute to the Hog...if I could just get it out! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Goose, I have a friend who draws a little and he said he could at least get the concept down and we could add details later. He is working on a rough draft now and I will post when, and if, we can get it the way I see it!

I have patches from old SQ that I have kept over the years just like most everyone here. People can send you scan's of these, then the person or people that draw it can have something to work with.

Let's not forget the Det's that were in Germany. I will send you a Scan ot the old Det1 patch.

Well, here's what my door would look like. It's a bit heavy on the religion. It would be a valley in the middle of a desert, with trees in the distance. Bones and skeletons all around. Scorch marks on rocks nearby, scraps of rags on bodies. In the center, two people. One old person with a long beard holding a Torah Scroll. One young soldier in uniform holding a bloody sword. In the sky directly above them, a Star of David, in light blue. There are two Hawgs flying away from the Star of David, their tails touching a point on the star, heavily loaded firing their cannons, one on each side, exactly opposite each other.

If you need some "Bulldog" stuff just let me know. I can probably also get some of the "Dragon" and "Lobo's" too.

GREAT IDEA!! If I could paint it on my jet I'd do it in a heart beat.
But someone had to say something about no door art for the active duty CONUS guys!! AGGHHHHH.

I've been thinking about this a little more and how to best put it on a vertical door, will post my thoughts first chance I get...this afternoon or tomorrow, busy with the PIWIG today.

BR you are right about the F-16 and "No fear" sticker, I will post the story if I can find it, would hate to have to type it out again.

Weasel, thanks for the offer, if I need something I will let you know.

I was at Toy-R-us today and as I was looking at the figurines and realized, the door-art vision I have could be built from items found in toy stores. It could be built as a “forced prospective diorama” of the scene I’ve described using figures. There are some cool figures out there (like the Spawn collection) and I think you could find every mascot, in one form or another, and the “enemy” figures are wide open!

With a castle and some papier-mâché you could go as far as you wished with the project. Once built it could be photographed digitally and 8X10s sold to recover the money spent on the project. With today’s cheep miniature lighting and fog machines this display could kick-butt and only be limited by the builders imagination. This would also allow you to move the “players” around to put each squadrons mascot in a prominent position in the diorama for sale to that particular unit.

The biggest problem I see is Horatio Hog but, I’m sure a “he-man” or “Hulk” figure could be modified to fit the bill. I think I will talk to the SPD next week and see what he thinks of the idea…it would be cool and if built on a plywood base it could be moved around and used at all the SPO meetings. If I have no luck maybe one of the units would be willing to foot the bill and build it. I would say 200-300 bucks and volunteer labor could build one heck of a display. I also think most, if not all, of the money could be recouped by selling digital prints and computer wallpapers of the scene…what do you guys think?

I posted some Qs seeking a 1/6 buff figure for your customized figure on the 1/6 action figure board that I frequent.

http://www.onesixthwarriors.com/oswforum01/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5542

I'm pretty sure you have to a registared member and logged to view the post

For a muscle bound figure I would recommend a WWF figure that can be purchased at K-Mart, and replacing the figure's head. Pics and details for customization on a WWF figure

http://www.onesixthwarriors.com/oswforum01/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5067&highlight=Valiant

There are other brands out there but they are either not worth the money IMO and/or are very fragile.

This is not a GAU 80 but it's about as close as you can get for 1/6, unless you want to custom make one

http://store.yahoo.com/opsgear/16scalmingun.html

A company called Intoyz makes that and it can be purchased online. If you're interested LMK and I can recommend some reputable dealers.

As for finding a headsculpt for your figure, commisioning someone to make a Warthog can get very expensive.

Hope that helps.
