Would you be reffering to the TBF Avenger's predecessor? I forgot the name, but I used to know it once...

Sounds a lot like the B-1 being designed to hold three rotary launchers, and then some rocket scientist deciding to lengthen ALCM by about 20%.

LOL, whoops....

Ross, no not the TBM or TBF , I think it was a British req. but it's the same all over as per Snipes remarks vis a vis the B-1.

BTW the B-1s launchers were sized for the SCAD which became the ALCM thus the problem. But I gotta tell ya, to this day the LAST thing I would want to have to do is stop a B-1B with a load of SRAMs (if they were still in service) perhaps the most leathel combo since Tango & Cash LOL

did have problems, but it could still nuke the hell outta whatever it wanted to, back then. Liked the A-12, but just seems wierd if it was on a carrier. still cool lookin though.

The A-12 and the Hornet are apples and oranges, no comparison at all. The Hornet series are multi-mission swing fighters, and the A-12 was pure attack. Stress, can you give me some idea of weapons carriage on A-12? I never saw room for enough bays to equal the A-6 load.

A CVW of A-12's...NATF (ST-21 or something better) and an upgraded ASW/Tanker platform is EXACTLY what the Navy should have right now.

A-12 was to have a bomb loadout in the 18-20,000 lb class thats conservative I am told, but its a paer airplane so I want to be realistic about trap weight.
A-6 was an 18,000lb iron hauler.

Also......The A-12 was to be a USAF aircraft, to replace the F-15E.

Just curious...Why did the USAF get funding for an F-15E when they had both the F-111 and B-1 and F-117 intermediate and long range strike?

I like the USAF's justification...We have more room to store hi-tech shit than the Navy, thus we need more hi-tech shit. Its stupid to abandon deep strike/interdiction from CVBG's... negates the effectiveness of the mobility, and flexiability of Naval Aviation. The USAF, after the F-14D stands down will have the best strike fighters, and the USN has the boats...we need to find a way to merge the two capabilities.

cool stress thanks. I'd never even heard it had outboard bays or AMRAAM capability. And yeah the LGB versions of MK-84 are pretty sweet, but being a "stand off" sort of guy I prefer the AGM-130 version <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Among other problems, yeah. Classic case of taking a weapons system into production before completing a proper testing program. Geeze, just like the Osprey. SOB can't fly in ice is one minor problem. Makes you wonder how the hell it would have done a low level blowing into Russia?

A-12 program we spent 5 billion taxbucks and ended up with a plastic model. Not sure if the litigation is over yet on the cancellation. Dim cells recall there was just a settlement.

having seen the idea of a fan behind doors on the JSF, and the twin mounted vertival turbojets, ala Yak-38, I am doubt that they will be as reliable in combat. especially if they have to be deployed on united states marine corp and royal navy "through-deck" cruisers and STOL carriers, call them what you want, as most of the time the landings are done in the hover. The pegasus engined BAe Harrier and Sea Harriers, I think are a bit more resiliant in the area of reliability. if the doors of the JSF jam, then they can not be openned for the fans to work. personally I think a grille over them rather than doors would be better.
