Hello Gentlemen.

I am a naturalized Chinese American. (raised in the USA). I am in my junior year at my state university and is seriously considering entering the US armed forces with a masters degree within 2 years. My primary considerations are the Marine Corps or the Airforce.

To make a long story short, I want to serve this great nation and do my part to protect the rights and freedom we enjoy today as Americans.

I would like some feedback from military officers and enlisted personnel who have served in the US armed forces about discrimination regarding race\ethnicity especially toward Chinese-Americans. I have visited some military websites and noticed intense hostility between former US veterens and Chinese enthusiasts. Furthermore I have witnessed attacks against Chinese-Americans such as "Chi-Com" and attacks mostly by Non-Americans who have accused Americans of Chinese ethnicity to not be "real Americans".

My concern is the hostility between the two camps based on racial\ethnic basis or on ideological basis?

In your personal view are Chinese with US citizenship real Americans?

How would you feel serving with a Chinese-American officer?

Please be ruthlessly frank about this issue. I appreciate your feedback immensely. Personally I have been especially impressed by former US marines who have acted with a great deal of professional courtesy, dignity and respect in the face of personal attacks.

BTW for those who wonder: Although I view China in a favorable light.
I am 100% Loyal to America. I am prepared to fight and die in order to protect all American Citizens, Territories and the US constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic.

Warrior,

I went through Marine Corps OCS, and as far as I'm concerned, a Marine is a Marine. There was one officer candidate in my platoon who was Chinese-American, but to everyone he was an American. He was good-to-go. Hope this helps.

I disliked all 2LT's equally, so there is no problem there.

What is a real American anyway? Except for the 43 native americans left on reservations, we're all imports.

Chi-COM is just an abbreviation for Chinese Communist, not a slur or insult. It is a US military approved term.

In US controlled fighting positions, everyone is just an American.

A) View china in a favorable light

B) Join the Marines when you can actually form complete sentences. ;)

Everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I have greater confidence in the American Dream and in the belief of the constitution which states "all men are created equal".

I view China in a favorable light primarily because it is a recongnition that ethnic Chinese are capable of being successful and contribute significantly to the world. This is not to say I approve of their ideological thought processes.

In much the same way African Americans take pride in Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security advisor Condaleeza Rice; I am proud of the contributions made by Chinese-Americans for example Governer Locke of Washington state and NASA astronuat Edward Lu.
The following true story is a great example of what I mean. One day during the late 1800's while Chinese American rail road workers labored hard under the Californian sun, the foreman decided he needed to make some bricks in order to build a new housing complex. However there was a severe shortage of non-Chinese labor and the foreman, being under severe stress exclaimed "damn it, there is no one here who can make a few fucking bricks except the Chinese and we all know they are not smart enough to do it" Upon hearing this, a fellow foreman said "well they did build the great wall of China!".

I hope that clears everything up.

My friend Warrior,

I can assure you, your culture and heritage should make no difference in the career turn you take in the US military. I knew many people that were both naturalized and born here and it seemed they did extremely well. They were very professional and went far. I am the proud mother of a 1 yr old Chi-Com recently converted to Chi-American. Where we live people are very respectful of our daughter and her heritage as we are. The military is a great profession for people of all cultures and when I was in just 10 yrs ago, people did not look at what someone was, and it has only gotten better!

In our family, to be absolutely honest with you, we are grateful to the Chinese government for allowing us to become parents of one of their children. Even tho our governments may not have seen eye to eye at times, I feel that is where it should end. If anyone should say anything hostile towards you, they are completely ignorant and stupid. After traveling over to China, I had never met such wonderful and sweet people. I plan on telling my daughter the same thing, and if she wants to join the US military and has the same love and devotion you have for the US, I will be a very proud mother.

Good luck to you Warrior,

Wif

Warrior, what you are saying is that you are pro Chinese, as in the people.

What you said originally was that you are pro China, which implies the nation, which is completely different.

I respect the chinese people immensely, they invented Kung Fu. :)

Kung Fu is my favorite martial art, right next to Akido.

Wait, wasn't it a Budhist monk named Bo de Dahrma that invented it from Nepal?
