Eurofighter grounded after brakes fail in test
By Russell Hotten

ALL Eurofighter Typhoon jets have been grounded to sort out possible braking problems just days before the Royal Air Force is due to take delivery of the multimillion-pound aircraft.
Eurofighter is Europe’s premier defence project, with companies from four nations, including the Franco-German EADS and Britain’s BAE Systems, working on the aircraft.

But EADS said yesterday that governments using test jets, including Britain, should suspend flights while the company investigates problems with landing gear and brakes on one of its aircraft.

EADS insisted these were normal “teething problems” associated with development of a new aircraft. For the faulty aircraft, its emergency braking system was engaged and the jet landed safely in Germany, the group said.

EADS would not discuss which contractors were responsible for the faulty equipment. A spokesman said: “The Eurofighters are staying on the ground until we know if this problem is unique to the test aircraft.”

Costing about £57 million each, the Eurofighter has been criticised as a relic of a Cold War mentality that is not suitable for warfare in a modern age.

But Britain, France, Germany and Italy are committed to buying 148 Eurofighters, including 55 for the RAF. The governments are about to sign contracts for another 236, including 90 for Britain.

The project is four years behind schedule. Other faults were discovered earlier this year and in November a test aircraft crashed in Spain, although the pilots ejected safely.

The RAF is due to take delivery of its first three Eurofighters in the next ten days. It was unclear if this would be delayed. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “Any delay is frustrating, but safety is paramount.”

The setback comes at an embarrassing time — the Eurofighter has just been shortlisted by Singapore, an export deal expected to be worth more than $1 billion (£600 million).

Oh GAWD! Oh GAWD! ROFLMAO! Where is a roll-around smiley when I need one? LOL!

Talk about spin and lies in that article...

"EADS insisted these were normal “teething problems” associated with development of a new aircraft."

Yeah, new aircaft, discovering breaking problems that should have been figured out at least ten years ago for an aircraft that should have been in service in 1988!...

"The project is four years behind schedule."

Four years?...Try at least FOURTEEN!

Man, why won't these tards just accept their losses and let the Eurospender die! lol

the braking prob has already been fixxed(or at leaste found), it was a problem with production of a cicuit board IIRC. and the Eurofighter goes back to like the late 70's early 80s when it was an MBB project even before the EFA.

Yeah, I've got a magazine article with the original twin-tailed design (the rest looked the same) from 1978/1979 around here, somewhere. lol

face it, rather than Eurofighter Typhoon, it should be called Eurof**kup Trys***e, millions of pounds (or euros) over budget, designed by a committee that couldnt decide what it should do, a multi-way party, which part way through the design stage, France pulled out and went their own way, (et tellement là est venu la Rafale), it flew before the typhoon and is in my opinion, a far more potent weapon.

Eurofighter's weapons are still causing problems as well, face it, its a big white fluffy elephant, and will probably go the same way as the mammoth! face it, the Luftwaffe and RAF should buy the YF23!

...or for that matter, buy the Sukhoi SU27 series, put English jet engines and NATO armaments in it. that would be better still.

[sarcasm] But the Eurofighter is the best aircraft in the world, even better than the F/A-22. It can't possibly have any problems. [/sarcasm]

"you're about the only one that thinks Rafale is better than EuroPhoon"

Personally one's no better than the other to me.

They have nearly identical flight envelopes, very similar performance, and comparable sensors. I'll give the EF the edge in weapons just cause i hate the French, but seriously....they're the same damned concept in slightly different wrappers.

One word. Versatility. It's doubtfull, that since France is out of the EuroFudger project.

That unlike the Rafale. The EuroFlameout doesn't have a white flag that can pop up from behind the cockpit, with the flip of a switch. The yellow switch I think.

At one point someone had made a French vehicle mod for Operation Flashpoint that caused a white flag to pop up on French tanks when the fire button was pushed :D

Overkill??? I'd kill a fly with a howitzer if I had one.

No, It was about a year and a half ago, and I don't think he ever got a host to put it up for download (otherwise I would have it :D ). He caught a lot of flak for being "insensitive" or some such other BS. but he did post a couple of screen shots at the time. funny as hell seeing a leclerk with a pop up white flag. :)

Yeah I know about being called "insesitive" for saying such things.

You've had to of heard about the French Canadian Guy on a Horror Movie message board. That told me to "Take my KKK comments someplace else". (Didn't want to forget about Horrido telling me to say butte-butte-butte-butte)

Here's a link to the memorable quote. Hope the link works. http://www.darkdreams.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&postid=47904#47904

given all the euro figheter problems, Id say a Mitsubishi A6M is a better combat plane, lol, seriouly, the French must have forseen the problems of the Typhoon, thats why they pulled out at an early stage.

cowardly maybe, but stupid, they aint.

its a plane built by a budget by 4 nations, and a total compromise, its a shame that the UK has to do this, but if we cant have the Rafale, id say the RAF should try and go for red iron, in the form of the SU27 family, with local modification.

At this moment, Id say ANY FIGHTER IS BETTER THAN EUROFIGHTER, even the Northrop F5 Fredom fighter!!
