Took the wife to an animal park near Burford in Oxfordshire today.

It just happens to be almost at the end of the runway for Brize Norton.

Heard a loud noise, looked up and saw the first of four C-17's banking in to land (and one AWAC).

They are seriously big and yet seemed to float around up there pretty well.

I started thiking, I know it must be pretty cool to be a fast jet jockey, but flying something that big about must be well cool...

They say the flight display for the An-224 Cossak is very impressive too, but then again it's empty the whole time too lol

A 9mm MAY expand, but a 45 will NEVER shrink!

Yup, C-17's are cool...unless it's 0430, you're 300 meters from the end of the runway and they're doing engine run-ups!

Let's get it right -

Start of test, you're 300 mtrs from the end of the runway.

End of test, you're 600 mtrs from the end of the runway in a crumpled and dusty heap...

Coolest thing I seen was while we were Afghanland, we had a C-17 fly over at a little more than tent high level on it's side. I swear the guy was wearing sunglasses and his name tag said.. Well he wasn't quite that close but it sure as hell brought everyone out of the tents. We all stood around in shock and waited to hear a earth shattering KABOOM followed by flames and smoke. Afterwards the base commander got ahold of him we where told that the pilot said that was his version of a combat take-off... yeah sure it was.

It's one hell of an impressive airplane for a trash hauler

capche-capche da - we go forward together

And man, the dust those buggers would lift, whether landing or leaving!

44- my 300 meters was on the west side of the runway. But, like anything , you got used to it.

Lil Hitler, were you there when the Marine Harrier's were trying to have a mission?

30MM, I was there when they started bringing in the Harriers.. not to sure if they had a mission at that time. I do know the F-18's that where flying in the area where of NO HELP, always bingo fuel and we'd have to scramble aircraft to cover their missions.

Roger that. I was there when the Harriers left...mostly in crates! those **%@ Marines would fly low, slow and dirty down the length of the runway whenever they returned from a mission, around 0630(local)to make sure everyone else was up if they had to be. Everything in the JOC had to stop when they roared past. I think it was their way of being macho. Meanwhile, the Hogs just slipped in and out executing multiple missions 24/7.

Anybody remember the quote from the Simpson's when Side Show Bob steals the Nuke during the air show.

"And here's the pride of the American Air Force - The British made Harrier"
