How?

A 9mm MAY expand, but a 45 will NEVER shrink!

This is mine opinion. The ISS is growing bigger and bigger in space. China thinks in commercial way. They start next to it a Chinese Restaurant

U.S. Space Shuttle orbital height: 115-400 miles
Chinese Shenzhou 5 manned capsule orbital height: 213 miles
GPS orbital height: 12,500+ miles
Not gonna happen, worry about them crossing the straights of Taiwan,
it's a far more likely possibility.

LMOA... Brilliant

IMHO China in space is a domestic prestige thing for the benefit of 'civilian moral'

Unfortunately this kind of thinking misses the point that the common Chineese worker doesn't want a Trillion Renminbi space programme, just a new piece of string to hold his water buffalo with.

I'm with Booms, we'd better be more worried if they can chuck a missile across the Straights than a wok into space

I'm not a far east expert, but I don't think the Chinese government does anything without thinking what it would mean to its military capability. I don't see why a totalitarian government needs any internal public relations projects. Every one knows that satellite launch capability equals intercontinental ballistic missile capability, and probably anti-satellite capabilty. It's an implied threat to the West. The implication being, we are not technologically backward. Don't provoke us. Any Chinese experts out there?

It ain't the heat it's the humility.

I'm not an expert in the region, but I do travel to the CIS and Far East quite a bit.

It has always struck me as odd how exactly the sort of regimes that wouldn't need stiring symbols of national pride to keep the government in charge seem to put them up everywhere.

I came to the conclusion that they do it because they can.

In our societies government excess with regards statues and fancy (but utterly useless) buildings would eventually be rejected by the general population and the governmant in question would be voted out next time round.

In these totalitarian states they seem the get off on sticking it to the down-troden and hungry population and saying, you might want a new hospital or food for your kids, but we're going to spend the money on a new statue of Mao's dog.

In fact in the Middle East the beautification of the Gulf States has reached a frenzy of competion which is frankly rediculous even when you have as much money sloshing about as they do.

Libya is another good example, symbols to the greatness of Mad Dog and the Libyan state everywhere you look and the streets stink of sewage.

I'm not saying the military aspect doesn't come into it and you would know more than me, but does anybody really think they need to posture in front of the States. You could squash them like a bug if the going got nasty. I mean really nasty where conventional war was no longer on option.

You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky...
